Evening all,

What a pickle I am in! :( I am going to be getting my ps3 replaced soon under the Continuous Play scheme. Now, I need to get all my saved games / settings / video files / music files etc etc etc. from the HDD which I took out of my faulty ps3.

I have placed my HDD into a USB SATA Cradle device which should be able to read the contents of what is on the HDD. However, when I attach the device up to Windows it tells me nothing is there, despite installing drivers for the device. When I go into Disk Management under Computer Management in Adminstrative Tools from within Windows Vista it tells me that it recgonises the drive but that it is "unallocated". :o

Is there any way for me to get all my saved files off the HDD?

By the way, I should probably point out that when you get a new ps3, it is not a simple case of swapping out the default HDD for the one which has all your saved games as the ps3 will tell you that it does not recognise your HDD and asks you to format it (not what you want to do when you have spent 60+ hours on Fallout 3!! :().

Help! :(

The PC won't recognise it as the PS3 uses a proprietary format for the harddrive. Other than that i can't explain/help with anything i'm afraid, sorry mate.

Actually, does anyone know if the Continuous Play scheme covers consoles that have been opened? i.e. the seal underneath the console (beside the HDD compartment) being broken? I am considering fixing the damn thing myself using one of the guides smallios74 found as I really really really want to avoid losing all my data! :(

Have they taken the console yet?

If not, pop the HDD back in and just do the system backup onto an external HDD, or if you don't have one, pop your PC HDD into your USB SATA cradle and use it.

I think the sticker only applies to the free warranty you get with the PS3 on purchase. As you are paying for an extended warranty they will still be required to repair it. Obviously i would get proper confirmation before you do anything rash.

No, they haven't. Unfortunately, because I have YLOD, I can't even get boot the damn thing up to see anything, let alone do a backup.

edit: just noticed your sig! :D

Only thing I can suggest is trying to switch it on/off until you can get access to the XMB and HDD? It may not be completely busted, just take a few starts to get it going. I know it sounds like piffle but it might be worth a go. Or see if you could access the recovery menu

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

Do it, its a quick ish repair job if you have the right tools, all the ones ive done as soon as ive ot them workin ive copied all the save games off and done a HDD backup just incase it dies soon after. The Warranty sticker is on the top near a small rubber bung than you have to remove to get at a screw.

Thanks. I would try this if I could acually get the thing to do something other than power on, beep, flash yellow and then give me forever flashing reds lights... :( YLOD sucks!

I wish I could just give it to you to do! :D I'm gonna have to buy a heatgun for this job! :( Considering giving Continuous Play a call to see what they offer in the way of getting my data back, my fifa 09 disk back and also whether it matters if the warranty sticker is tampered with! Grrr... what a pain in the rear end!!!

Edit: What is this torque spin screwdriver that Gilsky talks of?

Screw it. I'm doing it. Ordered the heat gun and some Artic Silver 5. Just hope this works. Reminds me of my old PC modding days! ahhhh. *sigh* :p

How much did you pay for the heat gun? Screw fix (not a competitor i hope?) do one for about £17, just make sure it has a a temp range of 250-350 any higher and you'll start to cook the components and start to damaged the PCB. The Flow also needs to be about the 250- 300 ltr/min, again much more it will start to reflow everything around the BGA and possibly start to blow small smd, such as caps, from the board. I got one from a catalogue store for £20 it has a low heat and low flow setting off 300 and 300l/m works a treat. If you get one on the higher/faster (but still in the ranges i said) flow/temp just move it slightly further away from the board, a technique i use is to get some kitchen paper and set the gun up start high then move the heat gun towards the paper, when it starts to scorch its about the right distance, if it catches fire your to close lol.:D

lol. I ended up buying the one that Gilsky used in his guide. It is fairly expensive, especially in comparison to the one which you bought but at least it is half decent and guarantees a steady temperature and controllable output of velocity.

Now correct me if im wrong BUT the second you put that hdd back in it wil lrequire a format regardless.

As if i removed my current 250GB and put the original 40GB back in even though it has all ps3 software etc saved it would format it?

I was under impression only way to do it is usb/external hdd to back up but this is providing it works =/... GL with the repair!

No, the PS3 hard disk is linked to the serial number off the ps3, so your old hdd should just work as it already has the PS3 serial number on it. The only thing that may be an issue is that firm ware is now partially saved on the HDD so it may casue an issue, could just be you have to download the upate again.

Ok. Reflow is done and ps3 is operational!!!! :) :) :)

Only thing is, like Gilksy, I am one screw spare! :p Have no idea where it goes and don't care at this point. Console is whisper quiet due to having had a full service and just doing system update currently. Woooohooooo!!!!!!! :) :) :) Can you tell I am happy?! :p
