Evening all,

What a pickle I am in! :( I am going to be getting my ps3 replaced soon under the Continuous Play scheme. Now, I need to get all my saved games / settings / video files / music files etc etc etc. from the HDD which I took out of my faulty ps3.

I have placed my HDD into a USB SATA Cradle device which should be able to read the contents of what is on the HDD. However, when I attach the device up to Windows it tells me nothing is there, despite installing drivers for the device. When I go into Disk Management under Computer Management in Adminstrative Tools from within Windows Vista it tells me that it recgonises the drive but that it is "unallocated". :o

Is there any way for me to get all my saved files off the HDD?

By the way, I should probably point out that when you get a new ps3, it is not a simple case of swapping out the default HDD for the one which has all your saved games as the ps3 will tell you that it does not recognise your HDD and asks you to format it (not what you want to do when you have spent 60+ hours on Fallout 3!! :().

Help! :(

Actually, does anyone know if the Continuous Play scheme covers consoles that have been opened? i.e. the seal underneath the console (beside the HDD compartment) being broken? I am considering fixing the damn thing myself using one of the guides smallios74 found as I really really really want to avoid losing all my data! :(

Have they taken the console yet?

If not, pop the HDD back in and just do the system backup onto an external HDD, or if you don't have one, pop your PC HDD into your USB SATA cradle and use it.

No, they haven't. Unfortunately, because I have YLOD, I can't even get boot the damn thing up to see anything, let alone do a backup.

edit: just noticed your sig! :D

I think the sticker only applies to the free warranty you get with the PS3 on purchase. As you are paying for an extended warranty they will still be required to repair it. Obviously i would get proper confirmation before you do anything rash.

True.

Only thing I can suggest is trying to switch it on/off until you can get access to the XMB and HDD? It may not be completely busted, just take a few starts to get it going. I know it sounds like piffle but it might be worth a go. Or see if you could access the recovery menu

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

Thanks. I would try this if I could acually get the thing to do something other than power on, beep, flash yellow and then give me forever flashing reds lights... :( YLOD sucks!

Do it, its a quick ish repair job if you have the right tools, all the ones ive done as soon as ive ot them workin ive copied all the save games off and done a HDD backup just incase it dies soon after. The Warranty sticker is on the top near a small rubber bung than you have to remove to get at a screw.

I wish I could just give it to you to do! :D I'm gonna have to buy a heatgun for this job! :( Considering giving Continuous Play a call to see what they offer in the way of getting my data back, my fifa 09 disk back and also whether it matters if the warranty sticker is tampered with! Grrr... what a pain in the rear end!!!

Edit: What is this torque spin screwdriver that Gilsky talks of?

Screw it. I'm doing it. Ordered the heat gun and some Artic Silver 5. Just hope this works. Reminds me of my old PC modding days! ahhhh. *sigh* :p

lol. I ended up buying the one that Gilsky used in his guide. It is fairly expensive, especially in comparison to the one which you bought but at least it is half decent and guarantees a steady temperature and controllable output of velocity.

Ok. Reflow is done and ps3 is operational!!!! :) :) :)

Only thing is, like Gilksy, I am one screw spare! :p Have no idea where it goes and don't care at this point. Console is whisper quiet due to having had a full service and just doing system update currently. Woooohooooo!!!!!!! :) :) :) Can you tell I am happy?! :p

Excellent news man. From what i hear they're pretty reliable once they're reflowed, or are you gonna get a replacement anyways?

Thanks. I was debating that with myself last night! I really don't know. Last week, if you had asked me, I would have said, yes, definitely 80GB here I come!!! but but but!!! 4 USB ports (which I do use!! - PlayTV, PS Eye, External HDD and Flash Drive), Backwards Compability (Fair enough, I hardly use it), and Card Reader (Which I have used a few time). Plus, I have just rebuilt it and love it as a result!!! :p

Oh my God!!!!!

It is giving me an ETA of 10 hours to completely backup my ps3!!!! :( I seriously hope it doesn't die during this!!! 320GB HDD by the way! :o

Well, got the console finally backed up this morning. Going to slip in a replacement 7,2000 rpm 320GB SATA II HDD later that I bought and then restore all the data to it. Hopefully it will improve the XMB access times slightly (over my other 320GB 5,400 rpm). I cannot tell you how over the moon I am that I managed to fix my own ps3! :p

Just for future reference, the backup facility also backs up game installs, which imo is completely pointless backing up. You may as well just install them again off the CD. The actual save game files and settings etc. are small and so the backup process is much much quicker enless you have loads of PSN games etc.

I am just restoring all my stuff back onto my new drive. Got another couple of hours to go... again! :o I don't mind waiting though. I'm just glad to have my ps3 working at this stage. :p

Just noticed this, So you did the heatgun thing? Excellent, You should be fine now, As I said in another thread, The heatgun for whatever reason has had the PS3s I've done it on up and running for a good while now, 2 months 1 and 2 weeks the other

Yup. :) Fingers crossed she holds out for good. I really did do a stellar job with regards to the whole process. Completely gutted it, cleaned everything from top to bottom. Applied Artic Silver 5 ;). Console it definitely quieter than I remember it and definitely quieter than my friends 60GB which I have been using for the last few weeks.

Blimey. I take my hat off to you. Gone are my days are fiddling with PCBs and ribbon cables. I know it's probably easier to do knowing the machine is already bust but still...

It was fairly easy if truth be told. Tell you what though, it has given me a sense of appreciation for the console and how well put-together it was. Solid bit of kit.

My friend has just reflowed his YLOD'd PS3. It now boots, but is asking him to reformat the drive. Is there anyway around this?

Well the HDD that he has put back into the ps3 cannot have been the one that was in there prior to failure and subsequent reflowing. It only asks you to format if the HDD doen't match up to that specific console. Sounds to me as though you have put the wrong HDD in to be honest.

He assures me that it is his original hard drive. If there was a loose connection it wouldnt come up with wanting to reformat it would it?

Could well do. If he is 100% certain it is the same HDD then I would say it might well be a loose conection. Have you noticed any damage on the SATA connector on the SATA HDD?

... and my ps3 has died... yet again! :o

Ironically I cancelled the Continuous Play thing about an hour ago. How unlucky can I get?!

The thing is though, this time it doesn't appear to be YLOD. I think it might be the power supply.

Basically when I turn the console on it loads fine. Give it about 2 mins (literally 2 mins) and it will beep at me 3 times, repeatedly flash red until I press the On/Off Pressure Sensitive switch on the front of the console.

Same thing happens every time! I cannot believe that has happened on the very day that I cancelled my subscription to Continuous Play!!! Seriously!! :o
