Whats up guys, been a long time since I've been on here, but back in 2011 with the help of yourselves i made my first rig and now it's time to upgrade. My ol' 6990 has served me well (ignore xfire problems here and there, lol..) but as the new gen of consoles has came i feel it's time to once again get the better of them.

So my current specs are:
GPU: HIS RADEON 6990
CPU: i7 [email protected] - Cooling with a Noctua NH-D14
RAM: 8GB Corsair XMS3 @ Stock
HDD: Samsung Spintpoint F3 1TB @stock
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth P67
PSU: Corsair 1000W

I'm also going to be doing a clean install with Windows 8.1 as I've heard it can improve performance in some games - noticeably BF4.

I'm basically just wanting to up my 1080p performance, games like Far Cry 4 are starting to really show that what once was top of the line is really getting outdated, so i'm wondering if i need to upgrade just my GPU, and if so, what to get, or if any other parts need upgraded too.

Cheers!

He's playing at 1080p, and you called his rig silly! :p

Rig is still very good, what slow downs are you seeing?
An ssd will bring some life to your PC.

I'll get a SSD For the OS, plus clean install. Tbh though i'm looking forward to the idea of a single GPU for a year or two before going SLI/xFire again, the microstutters have been a real pain for certain games.

How is the 290 regarded around here? I've been looking at the Sapphire and ASUS models and for the roughly 230 price - Which if i can sell my 6990 for 100 - ultimately comes to a mere £130 seems like a good option? With the potential to crossfire another in a year or two for another £130?

Since you're recommending the 970, anyone here using the Palit 970? If i'm going Nvidia i'd really like to get one of those cheaper models.

I have that zotac and I'm really pleased with it.

Runs hot in my case but it doesn't throttle.

Also overclocks nicely and no coil whine.

The 5 yr warranty is nice to have and their support is supposed to great just don't forget to register it straight away as you only get a 2 year warranty as standard.
