hi, does anyone know what the Reset button at the back of Western Digital's "MyBook" is for?
Does it erase all files?
Does it destroy partition table?
Does it change RAID config, and therefore destroy data?
I can't explain a reset button on a hard drive, does anyone know for certain what it is please? It is not mentioned in the manuals, pdf, websites, google, etc.. and I want to know.
Thank you.

{ps: I was not able to change thread title to my previous post, sorry for the cloning, but the thread title I had picked lead to think it was a dissertation post on the function of the reset button rather than a request for help on its usage]

Ahh... the joys of google:

Western Digital My Book 500GB Pro Edition (WD5000E032) ... The unit has a soft reset button on the back for restoring factory defaults

I wouldn't press it if I were you ;)

Hang on.... i think it may just restart the drive in case it crashes

Thank you Swizzle. I am surely not going to press it but I need to estabilish the amount of damage it can do on precious data, I have the 1TB edition (2x500MB on a fault tolerant raid config).
I don't think it's clear to me yet, if a drive crashes I can power off and restart the unit, do you mean that the button starts a re-format process on the drive that the unit identifies as faulty or it just gives it a jump-start to get it going?

thank you for your trouble Swizzle, I appreciate your help mate, actually this new info of yours makes sense: the fan can stay on for ages and the drives can stay locked to the Operating System sometimes without me being able to close the handle to those files, I choose the power off anyway option when asked and it does the trick. I will google better during the weekend and see if anything comes up and I will post the finding to complete this case study that can be useful if somebody else buys these drives and is looking for an answer.
Why don't they write it in the WD's website? They sell something they must explain how to use it, instead I am left with an installation book that covers 200 languages and it just says run the software then plug it in, how useful is that?
There is a .pdf manual in the cd-rom but guess what.. it skips the Reset function.
