Hello good people.

This morning we just got a new electric cooker delivered, replacing the one I had a misshap with.

Any way the guy from the shop wouldnt install it cos it was missing a little platic lug that holds the wire down, just a clamp. So I figure balls to that, they were gonna charge us £70 just to wire it in! I can DIY.

Now I need a bit help. This is what I have...

3 wires coming from the wall...

RED (LIVE????)
BLACK (NEUTRAL???)
YELLOW and GREEN. (EARTH??)

Then it has a cover over it like a plug. What wire goes where? Then I take it a a wire comes out of this box to the cooker. Can anyone help me set it up? It would be great as we really need that £70 at the mo. Its been a tough month with bills.

EDIT:

Sorry Mods if this is not on.

Dunno? the guy said it was a simple 5 minute job. It looks the same as wiring a plug to me.

is it a single or double oven?? a single youll get away with wiring it up to a 13amp and just plugging it in as long as its under 3KW.....if its a double should be on its on radial circuit as a cooker uses to much power to be powered off a normal circuit and if it is on a radial dedicated circuit it should be atleast checked by a qualifed sparky...most cookers you should have an 8.5kw cable.

A..to see if its ok
B... to see if its sufficent to carry the load

Plus you shouldnt do anything to do with bathroms/showers...kitchens yourself...when you come to sell the house you wont have a certifcate to say its been completed to regs.

Your choice...daft way to go doing it yourself imo.

Im sure its nowt to do with the council as im private. The wiring is fine, the old cooker worked magic. I just need a bit of help what wire goes where, Im searching the internet for help.

I instaslled my electric cooker myself, its basically like putting a plug on.

The wires should be colour coded and should correspond with the terminals on the rear of the cooker.

Whatever you do, remember to turn the power off

Yeah, Im not being an idiot, would you pay £70 to basicly put a plug on?

Im gonna go look at the wiring on the neighbours.

Lol, thanks for the tip Meatloaf.

Thats if you do something major yourself, like rewire the house. They have to come and say it is safe, or a qualified sparky can do the check and give you a certificate for it.

iirc it went down to so3me very small things, just just rewiring.

You're all referring to Part P of the building regulations. I don't deal with domestic installations at work, so I'm not an expert but generally, if you're doing a like for like swap you can do it yourself without any outside intervention. If you want to add something or install something new, you need to either get a competent person to inspect it or let the local authority know (like getting planning permission) so they can inspect it afterwards.

Have a look here for confirmation http://www.partp.co.uk/consumer/index.asp

Kitchens and bathrooms are special cases http://www.partp.co.uk/files/odpm consumer booklet.pdf

I know how its done, I've done plenty of rewiring in my time but I wouldn't want to advise you in case you get 230 volts up your jacksey.

Looking at it agin, I think I might get a sparky in. Im not confident about it. Oh well will see if I can get it done for less than £70 the well known highstreet group rape you off. Thanks guys.

Thats the best choice if your not confident with these things, £70 is better than what could happen if it goes wrong.

beginning to sound like my dad ;)
