hi im brand new to the site :) and came here looking for some help with building my 1st PC from scratch, so please forgive me if i've posted in the wrong place or something ( i havent used a forum for at least 2 years :L )

so yea after much much research i have decided on my parts at last, or so i think haha ... i have been using yahoo answers to get help thus far yet it hasnt proved too helpful 0.o so this is the specs .... http://************.com/parts/partlist/

and i've been told this is a blank link sometimes (maybe cos im logged in) so:

AMD FX-6100 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor
MSI 760GM-E51 (FX) Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Crucial 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Seagate Pipeline HD 500GB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive
EVGA GeForce GT 640 4GB Video Card
+ wireless card, win 7 64bit and dvd etc

total = £400.50 ( my budget is £400 and pretty strict so this was my best so far as others i tried were either like dual core with a gt 610/620 or over budget... no idea how i found such a good deal here :P )

anywho my Y answers came back with the following:

CPU is overpowered for the GPU get a more expensive GPU less of a CPU
GPU is under par
Overall isnt great
etc

So? how is it.. will it be ok for my uses ( college work, IT student, little bit of 3d design, blender, and casual gaming as i sold my ps3 ) should i get a 4-core AMD and a better GPU? do i stick with this? do i go for NVidia or AMD GPU etc?

and final question ... on Nvidia's site they clearly list from the GT 610 right through to the GTX TITAN in order of how good they are ( http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/graphics ... ow_uk.html ) do AMD do anything similar ?

thanks and sorry if its very long winded :)

Welcome to the forum. The 6100 processor isn't very good. I'm not sure why you've gone for 3x4GB RAM. Also the GT 640 is a very poor gaming card.

I'd be inclined to look at the AMD APUs instead for your budget. You get the CPU and GPU together. The A10-5800K might suit you well.

Also you want a 7200rpm hdd, the 5900rpm is all right for storage, but not for your OS, to slow.

Do you have a case and an OS?

The same as with teppic, the APUs seem like a very solid option for you.

However due to your budget and you mentioning you want to us blender and 3D design. Im assuming you also want to use CUDA acceleration. In that aspect you will want to add at the very least a gtx 650, as the card is pushed to the very limit when rendering and the slightly newer architecture is less prone to crashing. I used to use a GT640 too but it kept crashing when rendering, sometimes overheating and sometimes just plain giving up.

This means you may have to go over if you really want to game or render.

You are good for RAM as blender eats this for brekky. I would not go under 12GB

(Feel free to ask any 3D modelling/design questions you may have!).

If working on the original spec I would get something like this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £89.99
1 x MSI HD 7770 GHz Edition 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £89.99
1 x Gigabyte 970A-DS3 AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £59.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) £49.99
Total : £301.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

It'd be good performance for the money, significantly better than the top APU, but costs more.

hi sorry for the delayed response,

i have gone for a 7200Rpm Idleman and yup i do have the OS (win 7 64bit) and case (CiT mid)

teppic i dont think your spec is anywhere within my price range as my 400£ budget covers the: CPU, GPU, motherboard, RAM, wireless adapter, OS, Case, PSU, HDD and DVD drive ( i know my budget is low but im only in 6th form college and my jobs pays terribly :P ) also i changed it to 8GB RAM to save cost and avoid unneccesary purchases.. probably a stupid question but how come the APU you suggested is better if its only 4 core ? and i thought the FX model line was better than the A model line on AMD's behlaf

and Anox blender isn't really a big concern for me just a little hobby which would be nice if i could carry out on the new build... but im confused cos my current laptop (an advent roma 2000 with intel chpiset intergrated graphics and to the best of my recollection an intel celeron m 900 CPU) can run blender, albeit not well at all but i have produced a few decent renders with it, so wouldn't anything be a step up from that :L ?

also my current price with the changed HDD and 8GB ram has totaled £379... so whats my best bet here get a better CPU and stick with the GPU, Get a better GPU and a lower CPU or something else? bearing in mind that the level of gaming i shall do is casual... just to replace my PS3 .. bit of batman/assassins creed/COD etc no mmo's etc :)

thanks everyone

(EDIT) oooh i could stretch to get either a GTX650 or a Radeon HD 7770 ? either any good? :)

The APU is based on newer tech than the 6100, and it includes a reasonably good GPU - so it'd bring the price down. The 6300 would be a better choice than the APU though, that's why I listed it, but you'd have to buy a GPU on top (assuming you want nvidia, a second hand one would be best).

The AMD CPUs don't have integrated graphics so you need a dedicated GPU. Long story short the Nvidia 610-640 are NOT gaming GPUs. For what they cost you are better off looking at 2nd hand bargains like 1GB 460s around £50ish.

The AMD APUs do have very good integrated graphics which can play games quite well (the new consoles are custom APUs btw). So when people are on a very tight budget these APUs make for a really good all round home PC.

I'm a little confused over what you need really as you are contradicting yourself. If you have a case to reuse that helps, just check what sized mobo it can take. The OS will eat a good chunk of the budget up, if you need one then consider using the Windows 8 trial free for 3 months.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor **FREE SIMCITY PC GAME** (AD580KWOHJBOX) £99.95
1 x MSI A75IA-E53 AMD A75 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Mini ITX Motherboard £69.95
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-21300C11 2666MHz Dual Channel Kit (TXD38G2666HC11CDC01) £65.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020059-UK) £54.98
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £48.95
1 x Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced Mini-ITX Case - Black £39.95
1 x OcUK 20x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99
Total : £408.76 (includes shipping : £10.00).

That's a tiny ITX spec minus the OS (remember the trial). I do believe the mobo includes bluetooth and wifi. The A10K has the best IGP and I've included 8GB of really rapid RAM which feeds the IGP so will help it's gaming performance.

Once people know exactly what you have and need you will see other suggestions I'm sure

sorry i know im confusing, im quite lost with all of this haha, im buying everything from scratch :) although i have perpherals and monitor

here is my basket so far http://uk.************.com/user/Skaterboy/saved/26OI which inlcudes everything :)
changes are, gone to the 6300 not the 6100, a 72000RPM HDD and the GTX650 (or could swap for the HD 7770?)

is that any help?

7770 is the best bet if your not going to do too much rendering, I have one at the mo and its a blast!
