Need help with a Gaming PC

Hi guys,

I'd like to start by asking for your patience throughout this as my knowledge of building pc's is pretty limited.

I know this mean seem a little early but just after Christmas I intend to get a new gaming PC. As far as I'm aware there is a system where overclockers will build the system for me and I know it can generally work out cheaper to build it yourself but I cant justify to myself spending a lot of money on a PC just for me to try and build it no matter how easy it actually is.

The budget I'm looking at is no more than £1500 and again I know this is early I'm just hoping to maybe get an idea on my head of what I'm going to be getting and how much I'm going to pay for it

Any advice you guys can give would be much appreciated.

NOTE: I don't need any peripherals or monitors I already have that sorted.

Are you in interested in building a gaming pc with a custom water cooling loop? 1500 is a big budget, for me I would go with a mini itx syatem in a bifinix prodigy case with a custom loop for the cpu and gpu

Getting pre-overclocked systems are nice, but overclocking on Intel K chips are so easy, even i managed it (considering this morning i stood pushing a 'pull' door for a good 20 seconds)..

I think Freddie's suggestion is incredible but a bit over the top for someone who does want to build. A full custom loop in an ITX case isn't easy..

Building a system from scrathc isn't too difficult however if it is your first time, I wouldn't recommend doing it with £1500 worth of shiny things :p

On that note I would recommend a pre-built, not just for the ease of it being complete already! But the pre-done Overclock and warranty make it worth the extra over the individual parts.

FYI 24 months is the standard warranty we offer :)

For some real fire power, check out the Ultima Prism: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-224-OE&groupid=43&catid=2474&subcat=2481

Select the following options:

- AMD Radeon R9 280X Graphics Card
- 1TB HDD
- Samsung 120GB 840 Series Evo SSD
- Windows 8.1 64 bit

brings the overall price to: £1436.92 inc VAT

Sandybridge-E based system give massive processing power and a 4.2GHz quad core overclocked CPU, 16GB of RAM plus the latest AMD Radeon Card.

Storage is neat too with a 1TB HDD for backup and a 120GB SSD for your OS and games etc.

Thanks to everyone for their help so far but I think i've narrowed it down and just need to some help deciding between the two, but feel free to let me know if you know a better deal.

Changed to GTX 770 with NZXT Gun Metal

or (thanks to scotsdragon)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-364-OE

with R9 290x 120GB samsung as primary drive and 2TB seagate as secondary

Both with Win7 64bit

If there's any changes you guys would make let me know and again thanks for your patience as my knowledge is quite limited.

This is a nice system but most sites compare the 4820k as being only as good as the 3770k (its still a nice cpu) but if haswell is clock for clock faster and OC'ed more I don't see why I would get it over the 4770k's machines apart from going to a hex core later on which would remove your overclock,

heres a descent you tube comparison of these two chips head to head with some modern games like bf3 what you will see is they are in fact pretty close so it will boil down to what you like the look off more :)

Thanks a lot Scots (sorry it's hard to quote you on my tablet)... I think I will go for the system you suggested... I do have a few more quick questions though as it turns out I will be buying it in the next week or so...
1.should I go for the gtx770 or r2 290x... I've seen else where that the 290x is pretty loud.
2.since I've never bought a system from ocuk before but I'm assuming they build it and test it at the store then send me it fully built.. Just to confirm this is right
3.not so much a question but due to recent circumstances I might be actually to stretch the budget around 100ish pounds so if anyone has any further suggestions im willing to go north of the previous budget. (maybe a gtx780?)

1. By the time you order your build/parts after Christmas, manufacturers like gigabyte, ASUS et al. would have released their own unique coolers for the R9 290X which would offer cooler operation = better performance. (I'm guessing they would have released such cards by then!)

2. If you order a system from OCUK, they would hand build it, overclock it if you have opted to, then they will stress and quality test your PC to make sure it is all running perfectly before they ship it. The only thing you would have to do when it arrives is to personally install the GFX card(s) yourself. OCUK ship your GFX card in another protected package to prevent damage during transit. It's simple enough to install, Just slot the card in, screw it in, insert power cables, done.

3. Treat yourself to mouse/keyboard? Monitor?

I would go with the 290x (its better in most cases that the gtx 780) its a lot more powerfull than the 770 and as has been stated a few of the none reference will be with us very soon so id get one of those probally a gigabyte since their coolers as good, they will build it and test it and genrally make sure everything is upto standard, if you have 100 pounds more id suggest the 250gb ssd they fill up fast with games and such I only have 90gb left of mine and that just with 4 games lol or if your into music a descent headset or speakers but if your happy keep the 100 in your pocket and be even happier lol

Hey guys i'm back and id like to thank you all for all the help youve given me so far regarding my setup, thanks so much for being patient because I realise someone being somewhat abysmal here could be frustrating but I think ive come to a decision just before I get payed so I should be purchasing it next week and if you don't mind i just have a couple more questions.

So the decision i've come to is this prebuild:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-364-OE&groupid=43&catid=2475

And I changed:
The Primary Drive to a 120 GB Samsung SSD
The Secondary Drive to a 2TB HDD
The GPU to a GTX 780Ti
And the case to the NZXT 530 Red

Which brings the price to just over £1600 which is just about as much as I'm willing to pay since christmas is coming up and I was just hoping to get opinions on this and see what people thought, I changed my mind from the R9 290x because I read up that theres issues currently with it overheating and noise issues.

The second quick question I had was about the case and (again i apologise for being abysmal) was wondering is the NZXT Cases are considered good or if they have any bad rep because the case that Nath linked in the ultima prism(CM Storm Trooper): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-224-OE&groupid=43&catid=2474&subcat=2481 I actually really liked but it was a shame it wasn't an option on the prebuild I have went for.

Thats it really so thanks again for any advice you can give and I apologise for all the questions its just quite a bit of money to throw blindly at something.

EDIT: I was also curious if I go for this setup will a 600w PSU be enough to go along with it?

I had thought about this but I still seem pretty set on a 780ti, My main concerns at the moment really are the case and whether the PSU will be powerful enough

You know that you can ask OCUK to build you a pc without using the configurator. If you put a basket together of everything you would like, they will build it just the same (For a fee of course). The NZXT cases are very nice in my opinion, along with Corsair of course :D

I would think 600W would be ok for a single 780ti/ 4770K setup, but better to make sure with ocuk before you order.

Well this is news to me, what do they charge for this service? I suppose it depends on the work required.

nzxt are fine and so is storm trooper, I have the storm stryker (newer version of strom trooper ) on my second pc I had to mod it to fit a thick rad in the roof but since your not water cooling shouldn't be an issue lol the 780ti's are good so if your happy get it build and get gaming lol.... just so you know the 120 will fill up quick windows is like around 50gb when in and updated .... so you can only fit 3 maybe 4 big new titles ( ofc this isn't an issue you can still install them on your 2tb) it just wont be as snappy in loading

I have no idea :D but I remember someone on here posting their basket, and then they got OCUK to build it up for him.

Ah right, that's pretty cool. That would sure save me some hassle if they still do it. Then again, depending on the fee, I may just man up and build myself--even if it has been wayyy too long since the last time.
