Need help with choose pc upgrade

What is odd?

Optical disk drive.

If the rig is more for video editing etc than gaming then get the i5K spec I did. The 955 is on par with the sandybridge i3 but AMDs CPUs consume more power. I'm not an intel fan boy, I still run the phenom 555BE in my HTPC (it unlocked to a quadcore) and the i5 2500K seriously impressed me when I first used one.

You can add a GPU later wether it be a 2nd hand bargain or a more serious gaming GPU. Even the 460 kicks the Xbox and PS3 graphics to touch, granted you can't play Forza or other exclusives on PC though :(

Yes mate, but just a standard £15 one. Does the i5 have igp then? How much faster is it compared to my current system?

Providing it's sata there is no probs reusing that then, saves cash off my build to go elsewhere in the spec or back in your pocket. You can use anandtech to compare the CPUs again. The i5K is truly a great CPU and an excellent all rounder for gaming and video encoding. The i7 adds hyperthreading but you need to do a lot of video encoding for that to be worth the extra cash.

The i5Ks IGP is fine for general tasks but dont expect to game on it, which is why I've discussed 2nd hand bargains. You do get quicksync which allows the IGP to boost video encoding tasks providing the software supports it. I did a 2 pass re-encode of a 2hr movie on the fly from the DVD drive in 20mins on the i5 2500K with QS enabled, that seriously impressed me!

What software do you intend to use? If there's no special requirements such as CUDA then you'll be fine with a new Radeon 7770

I dunno, he could throw his EVGA 1GB 460 and use the virtu MVP that comes with most Z77 boards it would do him fine till he can buy something better, so maybe something like the following would suit better.

1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99

Thanks idleman, but the it is double the price of the 965, so I can't see that as a fair comparison.
@ Hono I do need a new odd.
@dacads I'll be using windows 64bit, 3ds max, games, all adobe cs6 suite, sony vegas pro etc
@ linwelin I see the price slowly creeping up, lol

For gaming the i5 is the better procesor, the only time you want an AMD chip right now if either for encoding or for the trinity's IGP basically.

Maybe you haven't been keeping up to date with the thread. The OP will be using the PC for 3d modeling/video editing etc not gaming

Ahhh only just noticed that lol.

@OP how many threads does the software you use, use?
Also does it support HyperThreading technology.
