Need Help With Choosing A New Monitor.

Hello all,

I've had my current monitor for nearly seven years (see sig) and it's been great. However, now I think I've reached a point where I could do with more desktop space, a higher refresh rate (for my eyes if nothing else), and a greater resolution. I don't think I'll be going above 1440p, but if someone can convince me that 4K is worth it now then fair enough.

The problem is I don't have much of an idea of whether to go for a G-Sync screen, and also, if I should be looking at the super widescreen monitors. My current monitor is an IPS one, but should I consider TN or any other type?

Can someone help me sort out the wheat from the chaff? :D

Thanks.

I should add that although I have no set budget, I would like to get something at a half decent price if possible. I tend to stay away from bleeding edge tech, but even so, I'll consider any suggestions. :)

Another thing I should have added earlier : I use my screen for gaming, video editing, watching films / YouTube.

I'm seriously considering an Asus PG279Q or, if the cost (after buying a 980ti a few weeks ago) scares me too much, I'm also looking at the PG278Q. Both seem very good though far from cheap.

I might as well tag along here as start my own thread asking relatively similar questions.
Would anyone care to either point at a site with a suitable breakdown or do a quick list of gaming worthy IPS gsync 1440p panels? :D

I'm not super demanding so thinking the whole "144hz, 1440p, gsync, IPS" list isn't QUITE needed (coming from a dell 2405FPW which I don't have much issue with... :p ). If it saves me over £100 I'd be quite tempted to stick with 120hz(? - worth the saving?).

Are the Acer ones worth considering?

Are the super widescreen monitors more for work based use?

I'm not sure if I want to be tied to one type of monitor so I 'may' not go for a G-Sync screen. I have also read that Freesync might be the way to go (long term). Bit confused here.

@peahead : how do you find the quality (TN)?

You really wont find a better quality TN panel than in the dell it really is rather good for a TN panel and i came from using an ips panel.

With something tweaking and using some of the profiles people have created im really pleased with it.

Nvidia dont support Freesync so you would need change you gpu also.

It does look like a nice screen and the price is pretty good, too.

The wide screen monitors that are like 2560x1080, - are they blocky in comparison to something that has more pixels in the same dimensions (1440p +)?

Damn...just realized the bottom two monitors are 60hz. I guess those are out. :/

Hmmm the more I think about, the more I like the look of the Dell mentioned further above :

Also, what does it mean when you see a horizontal & vertical number for frequency?
