Hi as i will be doing most of my photography (skateboarding) close up, and i would like to get the best angles, i will need to use a fisheye with preffered 180 degrees viewing angle. I do not want a add on to my normal lense, i want a proffessional Fisheye that goes straight on the body of my D80.

I have been looking at the Sigma 8mm f3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye Lens or the Nikon 16mm f2.8 D Fisheye Lens

I want to know if there are any better fisheyes, i do not want to spend more then £700 on a fisheye and hope you could get a better deal for me.

It also will need to fit on my Nikon D80 and easy to use for a noob like me

Thanks in advance :)

does it have to be fisheye. Would you not be able to get away with a 10-20mm lens. its no where near £700. If you look at my post here you can see from pic 7 that i was stood on the side of the ramp and was probably a foot away from the skis when they came past. thats @17mm on a crop sensor.

what are your plans for the shots - are you planning on selling them or jsut for your own use?

indeed, 10.5mm f/2.8G ED AF DX Fisheye Nikkor. its designed for DX, so it is actually 10.5mm - with no crop factor to factor in :)

This is not correct. The 10.5mm is 10.5mm on a full frame even though it is designed for DX. You still have to allow for crop factor as with all DX lenses. Still a great lens though.

There's also the Sigma 4.5mm for the silly wide.

yea, but you'll get you camera smashed getting close enough to fill the frame. using a 10.5 is bad enough most of the time.

oh, and if you ever go full frame you can saw the hood off the 10.5 and use it as a full circular fisheye

I can imagine. I know how close you have to get with the 10-20, so I wouldn't like to stand at the edge of a ramp or rail with a 4.5mm lens, hehe.

yeah i would preffer a fisheye, mainly used for skateboarding :), im planning to use it for myself, sale em if anyone wants it :) would like 180 Degrees viewing angle =]

I work and have a bit 2 much money, but not like £100000 :P

nikon 10.5mm anyone got a link and a price?

Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 DX Fisheye what does the F/2.8 mean?

Means it has a maximum aperture of f2.8, ie the ratio of the focal length to the maximum diameter of the aperture opening is 2.8. In laymans terms, it means it can take in more light at once so can allow you to achieve faster shutter speeds. Because its a ratio, the lower numbers are better. So a f2.8 would be better (at least in terms of gathering light) than an f4 lens. :)

ahhh thats quite important, so the lower the Appature? the higher the shutterspead the more light it will let in?

well for example

If i'm at ISO 100 Shutterspeed 1000 (sunny day:P) Appature 8Fstop

It would less light in then

ISO 100 Shutterspeed 1000 and an appature of 2.8F?

Would my D80 body allow a Appature of 2.8?

or is it more of what the lense would allow?

is the Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 DX easy to use? like do you just wack it on the body and click away or do you have to manual focus? and set up other stuff?

Can i ask what the DX stands for??

Sorry about all my questions

I'm still a noob with DSLR but im learning

Plus i want to get close with my Fisheye but not silly wide close as i have seen my mate get hit by a board cos he was so silly close

his D1....smashed

Yup, that calculation is correct. Aperture goes in 'F-stops' with the f-stop being; f/1, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22 etc. Each stop lets in exactly twice as much light. So an aperture of f2.8 lets in twice as much light as f4. Therefore ISO 100, 1000th second, f8 would produce the same exposure as ISO 100, 2000th second, f5.6.

The aperture is entirely down to the lens and has nothing to do with the body. so yes it will work perfectly on the D80. I don't think the 10-5mm is manual focus, but someone else will be able to confirm or deny that. But yeah, you just fasten it to the lens and start firing away. Still worth knowing your basics of exposure though. ;)

And DX means its designed for a crop sensor camera. Nikon make cameras with 2 sensor sizes; DX(crop frame) and FX(full frame, the same size as 35mm film) with DX being 1.5 times smaller than FX. This means that the field of view is reduced on a DX lens, so a 10mm lens will appear as if its a 15mm lens.

Hope that helps. :)

Hmmmm it is all a bit confusing but i am getting the basics of appature/ISO/Shutterspeed.

I thinl i will go for the 10-5mm then =] after i come back from holidays

I will keep you posted :) thanks

Guys

@ Raikiri

£56 VAT + £7 customs fee + whatever shipping they charge (probably about £35 if it's an ebay shop).

The place I am talking about is also from Hong Kong but I think they guarantee there will be no charges and if they are they will cover it. I can't say names as they could be a competitor.
