My wife played Minecraft years ago and has decided to give it another go but we've forgotten how to set it all up. Single player, survival, but peaceful so no bad guys. We've managed to get that part right, but now we need some navigation stuff. Is it possible to set waypoints?

She was building a house and lost it. I've said she needs to make a bed so she can die and spawn again there but is there a more efficient way of navigating?

Anyone know?

Cheers :)

There are mods for minimaps/waypoints, failing that press F3 and it'll bring up the lots of tech stuff including your XYZ co-ordinates. I think you can trim down the details shown, but I wouldn't swear to it. Can be toggled on/off though, so you can, for example, build a house and look at it's co-ordinates then go off and explore. Even if you die just navigate back to the house co-ordinates and you're golden.

Edit: Pretty sure it's F3, still not got access to my account so I can't check.

I don't play, but my son does. Early on, he lost where he'd built his huge structure so I had to figure out how to find it again.

Compass points to your original spawn point, which was handy. Unfortunately, he had travelled from there before building his structure! Found it eventually, and laid a 'breadcrumb' trail of lava spots back to the original spawn point so he could always find it again.

You can make a compass and maps etc. I'd suggest just playing though, in game navigation is something you learn through experience tbh. Cheesyboy's suggestion is a good one too but it's not going to help you if you want to actually explore.

My daughter is pretty good now but she'd basically leave a trail of torches on the ground when she explored, it was a bit like the beacons in lord of the rings, she'd put them where you could always see one other torch lol

I made towers of dirt, with an angle pointing the way home. With a torch on top. Meant you could see them even in rougher terrain.

EDIT - When I say home, it was actually normally to the nearest tower. So follow the towers and end up home.

Thanks all, much appreciated. She's gonna build some towers with torches :)

Make sure you're consistent with where the torches are placed, or extra blocks, so there's some sort of direction to them. Otherwise you just end up with a load of towers that don't actually tell you anything...

Wish I'd known about the compass always pointing to spawn before my son and I went for a wonder before building a large castle (at least large for survival).

I've never played minecraft. My lad is 8 and is interested in giving it a go, he plays mostly Roblox on our spare laptop, or Switch (although he hasnt played for awhile on that as I think he has exhausted the games we've got).

Not sure which edition to buy or whether to run a server ourselves on our home server...

Seems to run a local server permanently, you have to use the Java Edition, or your server is online only when your designated PC is on.

Choices choices...What did you do @Diddums?

My wife only plays locally, she's not in to the whole survival thing and just wants to potter around like women do, making pretty vases and stuff.

As for me, I'm hardcore, creepers and everything. I used to play the hell out of Tekkit when it existed but haven't played in years, and Minecraft largely died with it for me. We have our own Minecraft server which is child friendly a fair few of us have kids who play on it on the regular, also has a few mods on it, details here:

Pretty sure the Java version is the one that supports mods, the Windows version is for filthy casuals.

If you get the xbox game pass you get minecraft included. Might be a much cheaper way to get going. Especially with everything else it includes.

I've been having a lot of fun playing minecraft dungeons with my 8 year old.

EDIT - Guess saying the Xbox game pass for windows is a bit clearer? The microsoft subscription service basically.

oh right. Ok don't have an xbox, and never really looked at the game pass but I guess it gives you games on Windows. Will look now.

Gives a ton of games, and with introductory offers, it's great value. You can give minecraft a go, minecraft dungeons as I said is quite a lot of fun too multiplayer. Then there's more "serious" games you can try.

Apols. Missed this post first time round.

Thanks.

To answer my own question, I didn't realise that dismantling the bed would invalidate the spawn point. :o

I'm not sure if anyone's still following the thread, but I'll ask anyway...

I'm actually starting to enjoy Minecraft and have been playing on my Samsung S5e. If I pay for the realms subscription, would my daughter be able to cross play co op with me using her switch?

Looking here

it seems it is crossplay compatible, so I'd assume realms work fine. I don't think you'd need realms to co-op, I'd assume that's just if you wish for an always on server. You could also see how well this works

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/server/bedrock

if you fancy hosting one yourself.
