Need Help With My Room LAN

I work abroad on a construction site and live in a "camp". We all have a LAN connection in our room, giving us internet access. It always prompts for the password even when I ask it to remember my details.

Ive been trying to set up wireless in my room but my laptop cant be used as a wireless hub as my wireless card is not compatible with the 3rd party programs allowing you to do this.

I brought my Netgear DG834 router from home, but there are no ports to allow a LAN connection/network to be used as the input connection, if that makes sense.

What are my available options? Im not sure of what router/adapter I can buy to turn my LAN into a wireless connection. If anyone has any advice Id be grateful, cheers :)
 
Just turn off DHCP on the DG834 and run an Ethernet cable between the wall and one of the routers LAN ports. Connect to the router via WIFI and Bob's your uncle.
 
Dumb question but how do I do that?

I tried plugging the ethernet cable into the port and going to http://192.168.0.1 but it just says the page cannot be displayed. I tried changing the end digit to 2 and 3 as well but no luck.

Might be wrong here but you'll need to connect your laptop to the DG834 and firstly set it's address to an IP on the same subnet as you get when you plug your laptop into the wall (not sure if this is required but someone will correct me if it's not) and then disable DHCP.

This will then allow you to connect through the DG834 onto the network.
 
Ok, Ive connected the router to my LAN port and my laptop to the router. I have an internet connection still, but cannot access the netgear setup page. Ive tried the different IP addresses and its not working. How do I find out the correct address?
 
Usually routers are .1 and .254 in the last octet. The issue here is the router on your LAN may share this IP and cause a conflict.

Do the following with the router not plugged into the wall outlet.
reset the router to defaults, plug into one of it's LAN ports with your laptop and it should pick up DHCP. Run ipconfig in command prompt and the default gateway address is that of the router. Http to that address and adjust the router's IP to something NOT the same as the range as your campus LAN (This is to avoid conflicts) and turn off the DHCP server feature. You can find the network range for your campus network by plugging the laptop into the wall port and running ipconfig again. It will be 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x to 172.31.x.x, 192.168.x.x. So pick one of those 3 that doesn't match the ipconfig output at all. Then set your laptop IP (using static config) to the same but add 1 to the last number.
Then plug it in as described above, LAN port of router to wall outlet.

This way you can pick up DHCP from the campus LAN over wireless to use for browsing. Then if you want to adjust anything on the router e.g wireless channel or passphrase then you just plug your laptop in with a cable and it'll be set up ready to go. With the added bonus of not causing any IP conflicts on the Campus LAN and potentially ****ing lots of other users off.

Thanks for that. One of the problems I have is that I cant access the router menu to reset everything to default. Is there a way to do this without going into the menu?

Ok. Ive reset the router.
I ran ipconfig with the LAN cable plugged into the wall and it gave me the ip address 10.10.0.1.

Then I ran ipconfig with the router plugged in but the LAN cable unplugged. Its given me 192.168.0.1 and Im able to get into the router menu. I have disabled DHCP.

Do I need to change my ip address to something that is not in the same range as 10.10.0.1? Or did you mean I had to +1 to 10.10.0.1, therefore making it 10.10.0.2?

Sorry for all the questions.
 
You only need to change the address of the router if you need access to the router homepage thingy. If it were me, I would turn of DHCP and plug it in to the wall outlet. Then connect wirelessly. If you need to access the router you could always set yourself a static IP.
 
yes you only need to change your IP if you want to manage your router. You'll need to pick up an IP from the campus DHCP to get out to the net. So don't worry about that for now. Just if something goes wrong with your wifi etc remember to set your NIC IP to 192.168.0.2 else you wont' be able to get to the router management pages.

Though Grats for being about the first person on here who doesn't seem overly technical but still managed to carry out all my instructions correctly first time.
The model end user. Doesn't argue, does what you tell them and what do you know things will work :)

Im not sure how to find out an IP address from the camp network, would I need to use ping to find a list?
 
nah. DHCP does it all for you. Set your wifi adapter to optain address and DNS automatically and if the router LAN port is plugged in it should pick one up.

You don't need to change any WAN settings on the router as it's not routing. It's just being a dumb access point. Be sure to plug the wall outlet into a LAN port not a WAN port. They should be clearly labelled though. Usually as WAN or Internet and LAN 1-4.
