I have quite a limited knowledge to overclocking so I may ask a lot of questions and not understand some stuff you are saying.

My specs are:
E8400 stock speed (obviously)
ASUS P5QL Pro motherboard
Corsair 4GB 800MHz CL5 1.9v
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme CPU cooler

Can anyone give me tips/links or so on to help me out?

Hi bloodshed, when i get up tomorow il give you a quick guide on how to do it, just watching a film with the wife at the mo :O iv got the same mobo as you and im using the lesser e8200 chip, so it will be a little easier for you :)

It would be easier if I had someone with same sort of specs as me so I can get the best help. As some guides will not be that great for me due to different BIOS layouts and so on.

Hi again, sorry its took so long, got my waterblocks today so have been busy fitting it all :)

iv listed the settings iv used to get a basic overclock up to 3.6, iv had it over 4ghz but a couple of sticks of ram are the limiting factor in mine :|
go into the ai tweaker in bios

ai overclock tuner - manual
cpu ratio - leave on auto for now
fsb - mines at 450 but increment yours slowly from default, you wont need to get to 450 for a high overclock on yours. this is where you change the speed :)
pcie - 100
fsb to noth bridge - auto
dram freq - keep it at 800 or below for overclocking, then when done get this as close to 800 as you can.
dram timing - mines on auto as iv crappy ram installed, set this to your ram specs.

all the rest on the ai tweaker page on mine is set to auto except dram voltage which you will need it set at 1.9v from looking at your specs. CPU voltage on mine is set at 1.275 for 3.6ghz.

I also disabled C1E support in the cpu options and popped in the highest cpu ration setting just in case on the same page, you will see the ratio in the info above the options, always pick the highest number for these chips.

as always check temps, incrase fsb till unstable, increase voltage, check temps etc etc until your happy. finally id check it with a good 2-24h test with orthos or occt to verify its stable.

there are other much better and detailed guides on here, this is just the way I have done mine :)

to start with maybe, id be increasing by 0.01-0.02 each time i hit a wall :) what voltage are you at now, what speed are you at and do you know the VID of the chip??

Not tried to overclock now. However, I did have it overclocked by a friend however, it went all wrong when fuses went after I tried to boot and I accidentally pressed return to default. Now I think I hit 3.86 GHz at like 1.27v before (what i recall seeing on hwmonitor when checking temperatures one day). What is the VID of the chip?

VID stands for voltage ID, you can check it in CPU-Z :)

1.27 sounds about right :) have a go at it sometime and report back :)

if speed kills, your looking at a DEADMAN!

only if your ram speed is over 800mhz, when your increasing your fsb frequency your ram speed will increase too, each time it goes over 800 drop the divider down a notch and you will have a lower speed of ram if that makes sense. you should have a few options with different speeds available for your ram, just pick the nearest number lower than 800 each time you change your fsb frequency :)

it will limit your overclock only if you are on the 1:1 divider and you are at the limit of your ram, for instance I have 2 different lots of ram in mine, 1 set goes up to 1066mhz and the second lot has 800mhz spec. as i have the lowly e8200, when I have upped the FSB to get 3.6ghz my fsb is at 450mhz in the bios, with my ram divider on 1:1 it is still at its lowest setting 900mhz :( iv had to pump a little more volts into them to get it running sweetly at this speed. with your e8400 you will be able to overclock further as you will have a higher multiplier than me, you wont have to up the FSB as much to get the same overclock. I'm sure you could get a cool 4ghz going on your chip with good cooling :) hope this helps, in short your ram will only bottleneck when you cant set the divider any lower and your still over your rams 800mhz spec. although bottleneck is not the right word, limit your overclock is more appropriate. :)
