hey all i need help lowering my ping. A year or so ago i used to get a ping of around 30 on uk servers. Now i get a ping of around 50-60 sometimes more. Is there anything i can do to lower it

I have 2 routers bt home hub and a net gear one i've tried both and doesn't seem to make much differance in lowering my ping.

i have have a 8mb bt connection i just did a speed test my ping is 53 ms download is 6.29mbs upload 0.37mbs.

I have 3 pcs conencted to my router 2 through wired ethernet connection and one through wireless. My 2nd pc is only on when friends and such come over and my laptop wireless is generally on most of the time. Would this effect my ping? Would it help turning the wireless off and unpluging the 2nd pc when not using it?

My motherboard is a ASUS Striker II Extreme LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI, i also have the nvidia network controller thing installed i dunno if that's a good or bad thing.

Any one got any ideas? Normally i wouldn't ming but i got a tounry coming upand every little helps.

What speedtest? You really want a reliable measure of ping, like pinging jolt.co.uk (start, cmd, ping jolt.co.uk, wait) a load of times and looking at the average.

If the machines aren't doing anything there's no harm in them being on. The ADSL stats from whichever router you use would be useful too.

also try using tracert and posting a screenshot

run "cmd"

tracert jolt.co.uk

take a screenshot of this, lets you see where the delay is comming from

ok did the jolt test got a average of 41 ms

this what u mean by ADSL stats ?

Modem
ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023b.d20e
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 7616 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
VPI 0
VCI 38

Wireless Port
Name (SSID) NETGEAR
Region Europe
Channel 11
Wireless AP Enabled
Broadcast Name Enabled

Heres the creenshot of the trace thing

Thanks for your help guys :)

Those are some of the stats you're after, what you're really looking for is a mode which should either be Fast or Interleaved.

Have a look at your routers line info

Do you see anything called interleaving ?

If it is on it will add extra time to your pings , ( I got it switched off and my ping dropped by 40ms )

i cant find that setting where abouts would it be is my bt home hub router likely to have it, i dont like using the home hub however cause the wireless is crap

If you click on DIagnostics, there might be a link for "detailed driver information", that is what my Netgear has and in that list it should tell you whether your line is FAST or interleaved.

If not you could always do a google for DMT tool, download the version for your model of router, install it, run it and enter your router username and password, if done correctly it will show you the stats of your router and in there it will say Fastpath or interleaved.

and failing that, bite the bullet phone BT India and ask them whether you are fastpath or interleaved!! but that is a last resort!! :p

i'm struggling to find it i will have a good look tonight when i have more time, i will also try my home hub see if that lists it.

If it is this fastpath or interleaved thing how likely are bt to change it?

The BT Home Hub I had last year was dire. I had high pings and it would just crash if more than 4 people starting using the Internet in the house or if I tried to do router admining.

I'd suggest binning it and getting a decent ADSL router. Things dramatically improved after I did that.

i got the dmt tool working it says interleaving depths

do i need to ring bt and change it ? how long does it take to change it.

Yes you will need to phone BT and request that they change your line to fastpath.

It might reduce your overall connection speed slightly and it *may* not be as stable as before but you can try and see if it helps your ping.

Thanks for your help guys i called them today and they changing at on monday, hopefully i will get my old ping back.

I dont mind the odd dissconnect and slower download speed for better ping :)
