I am trying to get sound working with these three devices.

I am connecting the humax box to the pc monitor using a hdmi to dvi connecter but can't figure out how to connect the speakers.

I can get a picture but just need to get sound working. The speakers have to be connected to the box.

Humax Foxsat HD
Samsung Synchmaster
Logitech x-540

If you get a male RCA to female 3.5mm cable, you can plug the RCA into the L/R audio of the freesat box and the green 3.5mm jack (front) from the speakers - that will give you 2.1 sound. To do any better than that, you'll need something to decode the optical to analogue - a DAC.

TBH if you want more than stereo, you might as well bin the speakers and buy an AV setup or a more expensive (read overpriced) set of PC speakers with optical input - I can't think of any cheaper options.

what connection is on the back of the speaker box? could you not use optical?

They're analogue speakers - 3x 3.5mm jacks for fronts, rears and centre/sub - PC specific really.

Does the DVD player have another means of audio output (other than the HDMI port). For example, an optical port?

Yea, it has optical but the sub doesn't have optical.

btw, this is all for my sister. She can't afford a new tv so I am trying to set this all up for her. She just needs a way to hook up her DVD player.

Easiest way is probably 3.5mm - RCA from the headphone socket on the TV to the Front L/R on the sub, then just connect the DVD, Wii etc to the TV as normal and everything should play through the speakers.

no no no... lol I think you're lost. :D

Its not a TV, its a pc monitor with only dvi/VGA.

The only things I have in this set up is the 3 I mentioned in the first post.... plus now a DVD player needs to be hooked up.

I have the humax connected to the monitor via an hdmi cable/hdmi > div connection.
Speakers are connected to the humax box.
Just need the DVD player hooked up to the monitor and sub. HDMI>VGA? but how would I connect toe sound to the sub?

If the DVD has some other audio output connection like an RCA then it is possible to connect the dvd including the humax
to the sub but it may not be the best solution. What you can do is connect the Humax to the Front 3.5mm connection on
the Sub and the DVD on the Rear and position the Front and Rear speakers side by side, that is FR/RR and FL/RL so that
when you use the Humax the sound will come out of the FR/FL speakers and RR/RL when you use the DVD.The problem
with this setup is that when using the Humax for example (the sound will come out tof the FR/FL speakers) it is possible for
the RR/RL channel to hiss or hum as it has no active input or if the DVD is also playing it will also output the DVD sound at
the same time.So make sure the other audio source is off when using the other. The other solution would be to get an audio/video switch.
