Need help with Spec

I'm trying to put together a new spec last me the next couple years (with upgrades of course). I'm having trouble picking parts, and also whether it there is any reason why I shouldn't buy just yet (its not urgent).

From my old rig I'm keeping:
mouse, keyboard, a fairly crappy dell 15" monitor that I might use as an extra monitor for dual screen in games or sell, and a fairly newish WD 250GB/7200/IDE hard drive currently in an external enclosure, which I plan to use a either back up drive or as data storage within the new spec.

My budget is between £800-£900. I would like to go conroe, as that what the kids are always talking about these days, particularly interested in the E6600 for its overclocking abilities and to last that extra bit longer before the next upgrade. It's going to be for gaming, and as the new DX 10 are only a little while away a cheap card is preferable for the time being. Also, what is the current status of future support of the Socket 775, I'm not planing to buy into aging tech am I?

This is what I'm thinking currently:
CP-128-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN) 1
£195.99 £195.99
MB-058-GI Gigabyte GA_965P_DQ6 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-058-GI) 1
£129.99 £129.99
MY-058-GL GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL) 1
£164.99 £164.99
HD-046-WD Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-046-WD) 1
£46.99 £46.99
HS-026-ZA Zalman CNPS9700-LED Aero Flower (Socket AM2/939/754/478/775) CPU Cooler (HS-026-ZA) 1
£38.99 £38.99
CA-040-AN Antec Sonata II Piano Black Quiet Case - 450W Smart Power PSU (CA-040-AN) 1
£66.99 £66.99
Subtotal £643.94
VAT £112.69
Total £756.63

But as you can see its quite over budget if I also need a monitor and graphics.

This is still slightly over budget but not by all that much and you should be able to overclock it nicely. Socket 775 isn't about to die off in the immediate future as there are still quad-core CPUs to come out on the platform.

Or I could get something like the X1800 XT, which should last me until some decent DX10 cards come out.

semi-pro waster spec is the best ;) Maybe £ave by get a (160GB) Samsung HD & PC5300 667MHz RAM if not overclocking :D

The X1900XT will perform better than the X1800XT & give a good re-sale value :)
