a friends pc is having performance problems (getting 8000 in 3dmark06 100 fps in sourse and wont play crysis nicely)

spec
e7200 cpu
gigabyte ga-p31-ds3l
8800gs asus gpu
2gb 800mhz ocz ram
160gb diamonmax hdd
460w coolermaster psu
arcic freezer pro cpu cooler
plenty of case cooling (coolermaster elite)

so he bought a lot of new kit yesterday 2 try and fix it.

e8400 cpu
4850 gpu
250 gb samsung f1

reainstalled windows
8.9 cats
latest bios
latest drivers

but still gets poor fps in source and 9000 in 3dmark06

what could be the problem here

8000 sounds about right for a 8800GS depending on the clockspeed of the CPU, assume no overclocking ?

The 4800 series don't score all that well in 3dmark. You need DX10 vista and vantage to stretch it's legs.

Cysis should play fine on medium to high settings unless you are using a high res.

What resolution and settings is he using?

1680X1050 rez but makes no differance if he lowers the rez down i got 10000 odd on the same spec system bar a 3850 gfx so surely the 4850 is beter than the 3850?

3dm06 is very weighted for CPU

have a look at reviews, 12k is not for off for a Quad and an OC's 4850, a dual, even a 3.0Ghz one will be around 10.

You're CPU is 50% faster than his.... makes a big difference in 3dm...

can he run the crysis bencmarks ?

The NB voltages only affect stabilty. To little for a given FSB and it's unstable, to much and it overheats.

The 4850 is far faster than the 3850, you just can't measure the real difference with 3dmark06.

Get him to run the benchmarks for crysis and report the results of that.

Also check catalyst is installed as default ... let the application decide rather than specific 3d tweaks.

Most of the 12k dual scores are using high clocked CPUs >3.4Ghz and Oc'ing the card to 700Mhz.

Also, I had the same board, when I swapped the CPU I didn''t reset the BIOS and it continues to run with the old CPU multi of 8... vs 9 of the quad. It's worth checking the CPU is at full speed and the the memory timing are correct.

Found out the board is broke it was throttling cpu and when i turned speedstep, thermal jobbie etc it overheats the northbridge and dies
