need help

im not sure if im in the right place but here goes,mods please move this if its not in the right place.
i have just bought a sony vaio laptop off a mate its about a year old,i didnt want to infringe on his privacy so i formatted the thing and installed a copy of vista that i had lying around.now the problem is that for the life of me i cant get the wireless working i have tried to install the drivers and it says they are installed but it still wont work does any one have any ideas it worked before the fomat i do know that.
there is a program called smart network that some people have said i a cant get it to work with vista it keeps crashing once the laptop starts up.

In what way don't they work, do they install but won't find any networks, or won't they pic up the hardware. Is there a hardware switch on the laptop, is it lighting up to say its turned on?
