Howdy guys.

Just been scouting around some auction sites and came across a G0 Stepping Q6600 Processor for £80.

I hope this is a good price to pay for such an excellent quad core. Yes everyones talking about the new SB CPU's but quite frankly I couldn't give 2 hoots, Q6600 does the Job nicely and it an excellent upgrade from my E6300.

Anyhow, you think that's a good price to get one for?
G0 stepping is supposedly excellent for overclocking, and I can't wait to get this baby (assuming I purchase it) as high as I can, maybe... 5GHz? ;D

What have people who own one on here had these upto before? As much info as possible please guys, hope I've made a good decision.
Thanks.

5ghz will be hard work, if not impossible

i could hit 3.8 at 1.55V under water with max temps around 70 *C

You may want to check the VID as well. You can have a G0 but with a high VID that may limit overclocking.

I personally have a G0 Q6600 with a 1.325v VID and I've been struggling to get over 3.2Ghz. Now whether that is a result of my IP35/Ram I'm not 100%

And 4Ghz won't happen let alone 5Ghz. Aim for 3.6Ghz as a goal I'd say.

it is almost like they(q6600) have their own personalities! some will clock with minimal effort while others simply would not. But I have only seen once, some where in here done at 5GHz.

If you're in no rush then I'd wait until you've got access to the Members market as they're selling for £60-£80 there plus those selling them will be able to tell you the VID and how clockable the chip is ;)

Edit: Just noticed that you've bought one already, nm.

On my Q6600 I hit 3.6Ghz and that was with very good air cooling. I couldnt go any higher due to needing too many volts to pass 3.6Ghz. On my chip I hit 3.2Ghz without a voltage change, 3.3Ghz is where I had to turn it up a little.

Most i ever got from mine was 3.8ghz, very few will hit 4ghz, those that do will be under watercooling for the most part, or air cooling with powerful fans.

Thanks for the information guys, maybe 5GHz was a little bit too enthusiastic, and well I'd wait until I have access to the members market (only 10 posts) but I've already made the offer, and don't really want to withdraw it.

I'll have to buy some new memory now too, PC6400 isn't going to help my overclock anymore, maybe go with some dominator memory. Just bought another 4870 to crossfire as well, which means I need a new 775 motherboard.

Computers make me spend so much :|

UPDATE:
I asked for the VID Voltage Range, says 0.8500V-1.5V.
I'm assuming this is the same for all the G0 Stepping CPU's and that's a massive voltage range in terms of processors.

Is there much you can tell me about this?

The only way to find the actual vid is to have the cpu in a system and use coretemp to display the vid, (see my pic above).

I've never hear of a G0 with a vid of higher than 1.325. Was the previous stepping C0? You dont see too many of the previous stepping flying about, but the better ones clock similar to the G0 1.325ers. Cant remember hearing anyone with a 1.325 chip running day to day at 3.6ghz. Mine requires just over 1.5V (load, >1.55 bios) which means temps get too high quickly on silent/quiet air.

My GO Q6600 did 3.6Ghz with 1.384v under 100% load. It is a 1.25 VID. For 3.7Ghz 12 hours prime stable it was at 1.416v per CPU-Z at 100% load. I think the bios setting was a little higher but I had next to zero v droop on the board.

Intel website says upto 1.5 VID. I'll keep you all updated when I get it and install it, may be a while as I have no spare TIP lying around. I'll repost the max clock I can get on it when I install it.

Thanks for the information though guys, learn something new everyday, never payed much attention to VID before.
