got one of the above disks from OCUK on TWO offers. Mine didn't include any jumpers and i need one to make the disk work on my SATA-1 mobo. Anybody have any ideas as to where I could get the little jumper needed to put over two of the pins on the jumper board? Thanks in advance

Nick the jumper off an ide device (optical drive?) and ground pin 28 on the cable to force it to cable select?

The drive is SATA not IDE, he needs a jumper to force it to SATA 1 speeds.

I believe you can buy them sometimes from some electrical stores but I don't know of any offhand plus they would probably be competitors. Can you nick a jumper off an old system? I've taken one off an old hard drive before. Failing that the bodge is to just use a small loop of wire since that is all a jumper is, it isn't elegant but it works. :)

Are you absolutely sure that the drive can't autonegotiate? I've had two Western Digital KS SATA-3Gbps drives operating on a SATA-1.5G controller for months with no problems.

A jumper from an IDE device should be the correct size failing that.

I know, I think you misunderstood me or I wasn't clear enough. As long as he has an ide optical drive with a jumper to set it to master/slave/cs, he can short the ide cable to force the optical drive to use cable select without needing a jumper on it. Thus no longer needing the jumper on the optical drive, and can now use the spare jumper on his sata drive.
Or put a post up in the wanted forum :)
Depends how bodge-it-minded the op is :p

thanks for help guys - i dont have any old drives or any old hardware about that i can use. Will try and get on with WD and see if they will send me out some!

i never bother connecting front audio and mic up so i cut them off and connect them together to form a jumper if required

Ehhh the jumpers that were on my seagate 7200.10 sataII drives are tiny compared to normall jumpers, about 3 times as small as the default size on opticals, IDE hdd's and mobo...

Does the wd actually need a jumper? have you tried it without?

Hmmm k, still the question stands what jumper the wd uses, them small ones the seagate use or the normall sized ones on ide hdd's and mobo's, etc...

i would imagine its the small ones similar to the seagate - appreciate all the help in tryin to get me up and running guys

Have you tried a normal sized one on it? Even if you haven't got any spare just grab one off the mobo temporarily while the machine is off to try it for size.

If they are standard 0.1" spacing then I'd check a well know electronics stores website (Tip begins with M and ends with N). Just type Jumpers in the search box and bob's yer uncle.

Got 'em in all different colours too.

They have a branch in most big towns.

Sorry I couldn't be more precise.

A normal jumper (from an old hard drive in this case) fitted onto my Seagate 7200.10, I wasn't sure if the small jumper that was fitted onto the drive worked so I used the old jumper and it was fine. I've since switched back to the small jumper but it works as a test to prove that any jumper will do. :)
