*** When I go on the XP Laptop, and click 'View Workgroup Computers' i get this message: MSHOME is not accessable. You might not have permission to view the network resources.

Check that file and printer sharing is enabled through bother firewalls and turned on in vista.

try pinging from one another.

Easist way to access another machine is to open my computer, and in the address bar type \\computer name or IP and that should bring up any shared folders or printers.

what this ^^ guy said.

but if you haven't setup shared folders and want to browse the entire contents of the other machine open a run box and type \\%computer name or IP%\c$

the c$ bit will allow you to see the whole c:\ drive and you can browse the rest of your file from there.

hope it helps.

Not being able to ping the Vista machine shouldn't necessarily be taken as being a problem. The Windows Firewall will, by default, block ICMP Echo Requests.

Right, I have managed to get them to see each other.

When i go on my XP Laptop, I go into 'My Network Places' and then 'View Workgroup Computers' and when I click on my VistaDesktop, it asks me for a username and password, but I dont know what username and password it requires because on my Vista PC, i've gone to network and sharing and password protect isn't on....any advice?

The username and password will invariably be the same as the username and password you use to logon to your vista machine.
Enter the username in the form :

<vistamachinename>\<vistausername>

followed by your password.

That'll only work on an XP machine by default. Vista doesn't allow that unless you specifically create the hidden share. Certain versions might do it when turning on file sharing but certainly Ultimate doesn't seemt to do it unless it's manually configured.
