The core is the same as what I am using now and can overclock it to 4ghz as well I need something faster was looking at the i7 965 it runs at 3.2gnz before being overclocked so when I overclock it and hoping to get to 4.7i bought this

and this

I have it running at 4ghz currently
I am upgrading the core to the 965 from the 920 and will go for the GTX 1060 I only need it to do for a while until I can save up and get a good gaming pc I know its not the best upgrade options but I want to try get a little longer from the pc
For the extra cost of the 980x and 990x its not worth the cost I looked at the 990x and its over £500 and for a 3.46GHz compared to the 965 running at 3.2GHz its not worth it I am looking to put in the 1080ti or 1080 as it will do my new pc when I get it in 2 yearsWith your 920 @ 4.0 it's hardly worth the effort to upgrade to a 965 which might not such a good overclocker.
If you want to upgrade the CPU only the i7-980X or i7-990x which have the extra bus speed of the 965 and 6 cores.
But these still cost quite a bit £100+ and I'm not sure how much benefit you get on most games.
You can't use Xeon CPUs on your mobo https://www.asus.com/us/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/RAMPAGE-II-EXTREME/HelpDesk_CPU/
I can confirm I've had a RX480 & a GTX 1080ti running on my work PC. Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 with an i7-920.
Plus as you are already on AMD drivers I suspect you can literally just drop an RX card into your board and it will just work.
the X5650 is 2.6GHz same as I have now I need to go up in the GHz and the crashing is because my card cant handle some gamesThere seems to be a lot of misinformation in this thread. The i7 965 is not gonna be an much of an upgrade if at all. The most cost effective CPU only upgrade is the X5650, which are hexacores for about £20. They do work with your board despite not being on the list as thousands of people dropped them into unsupported x58 boards and OC'd them just fine. There are numerous people with your board doing the same.
If you want an upgrade right now, get the best GPU you can afford and carry it over to the new build. I have seen people with a 1080ti and that motherboard. Sure the card might be bottlenecked but it'll be a massive upgrade over XF 5870s. When you've saved up for upgrading the rest of system you'll get the most out whatever GPU you pickup.
Finally, if you are crashing whilst playing games ATM it might be anything in your current system, not necessarily your GPUs. So a new GPU might not fix that problem.
But most x5650's o/c to 4.2+ Ghz without any issues plus your gaining more cores over your i7 920 its a simple cheap upgrade many of us x58 platforms owners do.the X5650 is 2.6GHz same as I have now I need to go up in the GHz and the crashing is because my card cant handle some games
I have max ram installed I was told years ago by staff here I cant overclock when I have all ram slots usedBut most x5650's o/c to 4.2+ Ghz without any issues plus your gaining more cores over your i7 920 its a simple cheap upgrade many of us x58 platforms owners do.
Ps running a xeon E5649 ( lower specced version of the X5650) on a rampage ii extreme fine at 4.2GHZ all cores turbo's on less to about 4.4ghz iish
