Hi All,

My Radeo x850 xt pe died yesterday :( (from OC of course :) )

Anyhoo, im looking for a new card for my rig and must admit im a bit rusty on the hardware scene,

Its,
dual core 2400 athlon xp
win xp
2gb 3200 ram
22" samsung monitor (226CW)
Asus A8N Sli Mobo
2 X 220GB HDD
550W Enermax PSU

I was looking at the OcUK Geforce 9800 GT 512 MB GDDR3.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-108-OK&tool=3

I have two questions,

Firstly, will this card work OK in my machine (i.e. with my mobo)
Secondly, is this a good card or would you recommend another... Budget is about £100.

Any input or comments are much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Athlon XPs are old... and should not be compatible with PCI-Express interface used by graphics cards today.

You need an AGP card, an X1950 PRO should be pretty cheap to find today and will outperform your X850, but you will most likely be CPU limited anyway.

I suggest saving up for a new system, if you need something to get you by, use something like Radeon HD3650 or an Geforce 7600GT.

Just dont spend a lot of money.

Edit: You say dual core athlon xp... there are no dual core XPs O_o Do you mean athlon X2? 4200+?
If yes then you should go for a Radeon 4850 or Radeon 4830.

Looks like a simple typo - 4200

9800GT would be fine, 4830 is the ATI alternative

If you want to save a little, the 9600GT or GSO is a less powerful option.

Any card you have will underperform with the AMD 4200, swapped out a S939 AMD X2 @ 2.4Ghz for a 2.5Ghz core 2 ... graohics = 8800GS (9600GSO - booming Nvidia). The recipient was amazed how much better the system ran.

If you're not upgrading for a while I'd go with the cheaper option...... if it's a stepping stone then get the 9800/4830 or shop around for a bargain 4850

Hi All,

Apologies for my inability to post (my pc broken :) :) )

Sorry all, there was a dumb typo, due to drunkness :p

I was thinking of the clock speed and my old proc when I stated xp 2400, its a dual core with each running at 2400 which im reckoning would make it a X2 4600..... Sorry

The a8n sli is indeed pci ex (although I think its 1, not pci-ex2) is this an issue (i.e. would buying a pci ex 2 card presentr issues when using a pci ex 1 mobo)?

Im basically having a few issues providing direct comparison between the 9800 GT and the 4850.. is the performance noticably different between the two to warrant the extra £30 ish?

Also, do you think Ill fully benefit from the increased performance without updating any other components of the rig?

Thanks v much for all the replies so far and apologies for the delayed responses and typos..... I see OCUK hasnt changed in three years, still a friendly place with a font of knowledge...

Personally i would avoid the 9800GT. Radeon 4830 offers similar, if not better performance and is Direct X 10.1. 9800 GT is the same old G92 we have had for over a year now.

As for 4850, its a lot better than 9800GT, its better than 9800GTX+. Now whether your system could tell the differences i am not sure.

I would go for either 4830, and start saving for a new rig in about a years time maybe.

Very much agree with this poster. 4830 is a smart buy.
