Just bought a WD Live TV unit and plugged in my 2.5, 5400rpm sata hard drive but it is so slow!!!

Can you recommend a decent Hard Drive to go with the WD Live TV unit? SSD is out of my price range. Obviously a 7200rpm drive is the right choice?

Would a 3.5 be faster as it would run from the mains via an enclosure?

Any help would be superb as i need to get a nice fast drive. Max 1tb, min 750gig

Likewise i have the WD TV Live unit and have ran it with plenty 5400rpm drives right now it's using a 3TB My Book and it's fine, I have also plugged in several 2.5inch drives (all 5400) going from 250gb to 750GB and all have been fine, i have only used a cheap enclosure from amazon (about £6) and it worked great.

You say it so slow in what way playing files, navigating updating library.

3.5" drives tend to be faster at a lower cost. high speed 2.5" drives are very expensive.
Any drive will work. it just a case of picking a drive in the right size and price range. SATA3 drives are faster and the more cache the better,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Plextor M5S 128GB Solid State Drive - (PX-128M5S) £74.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £53.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) HDD £39.95
Total : £179.72 (includes shipping : £9.00).

i would go with a small SSD, 128gb SSD would hold about 50 ripped HD film's and you just have you main store of film's on the pc with the drive been updated as needed

For me 128gig would not be enough.

Would a 2.5, 7200 rpm drive be as fast as a 3.5, 7200 rpm drive?

If so, which one would you recommend. Around 750g would suffice.

2.5" would be a little slower. the cache size make a difference in speed, here are the cheapest 2 drives in the 750gb range the difference n speed is down to cache but the difference would not be massive.

both are 6GB/s and both are 7200-RPM.
