My PSU in main PC blew on Friday spent most of Saturday part swapping with spare PC to find that mobo has died with it not sure about other parts so will need a complete new build..

I have a few options in mind budget is between 600 - 800 need to upgrade from what I had previously (i5+660)

need one of the following:

i5 + 960
i5 + 970
i7 + 960
i7 + 970

Parts needed:

CPU
GPU
HDD (1 TB or 2 TB)
RAM (8 GB or 16 GB)
MOBO
PSU (was looking at the Corsair 750w noticed it only had a single rail is that bad?)
DVD rw
New case (want one that fits PSU at the top of case and the HDD fits in sideways)
HSF (something like the Arctic freezer 7 or better)

This is an upgrade/replacement build anyone interested in what the PSU was that failed it was a 630w BeQuiet PSU but I have had is since 2012 without fault so it wasn't really 'bad' but did kill my parts..

EDIT: Good news just tried the GTX660 in my spare pc (what I am using now) and it survived, still want a new GPU though :)

Tested on ETS2 getting around 40 FPS. Specs are below I will use spoiler tags to keep this thread neat..

Sorry to hear that mate, awful thing to happen :(

I'm currently running an i5 4690k and asus maximus vii ranger, which I cannot recommend enough, absolutely brilliant compared to my i7 920 :P

As for PSU, I'm using Silverstone Strider Plus 750W Modular '80 Plus Silver' and 0 faults so far, hopefully I won't end up in your situation :(

Ah, having tried streaming on the i5, while it's perfectly possible, I would advise against, the performance loss is noticeable. However if budget dictates you don't have that luxury.. it's adequate :)

I don't know how to do the Basket thing, so I'll just paste the stuff here that if I were in your position with your budget, if you'd like? I've managed to put something together I'd be very happy with for £822 :/

Asus Z97-K - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£14 Saving** - £253.54

Asus Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (R9290X-DC2-4GD5) - £239.99 (Faster and cheaper than the 970)

Silverstone Strider Plus 750W Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply (ST75F-P) - £95.99

Corsair Hydro H55 Quiet Liquid CPU Cooler - £59.99

Kingston HyperX Savage Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11SRK2/8) - £59.99

NZXT Source 340 Midi-Tower Case- Black Window - £52.99

Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD - £44.99

Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM - £14.99

I think that covers everything, if you had the budget I'd throw in an SSD. I'm using the OCZ Arc 100, £64 for 240gb ssd :)

I'm sure others will reply with something else. But that is what I'd go with from experience of the products.

So is it always better to buy a bundle on CPU+MOBO or would choosing a cheaper board be a better option?

Been looking at the i7 Devil canyon 4 GHz it looks very tempting but is there much advantage of buying a >£100 MOBO for it?

Personally, I don't like to cheap out on my motherboard, after all it's the hub of everything. With a decent motherboard / cpu you can probably get away with a less expensive graphics card. the gtx 960 or something. But the other chaps here can most likely give you more insight. I know that on the more expensive boards it's not just bunged full of features, they are made of higher quality components. I would say go for a decent cpu / mobo and upgrade your graphics card at a later date.

Haha, well, you can still cyptomine on nvidia just not as well iirc. But I just couldn't ignore the fact it's as good as a 970 and in most cases better, costs less. Something.. nerdy in me likes the fact it's power hungry.

Fairly appealing RJC, apart from the inno3d card, I wouldn't wipe my arse with them :P Every machine I've fixed / upgraded has had a failed inno3d card in it.

OK the case isn't really important I have a Zalmon case which does have the PSU at bottom but it has the side slotting HDD bays which I like so I will just reuse that..

Don't want to spend no more then £70 on a PSU really and im not really ready for SSD drives yet :) with savings in those areas would it be worth spending more to get the i7 bundle and maybe use cheaper 1600 RAM?
