I was going to spend double this amount on a rig , but have humbled up a bit about what spec I want because double this would have been overkill in my opinion , I'm pretty happy so far with my selection but criticism is welcome.
I willing be buying this very soon now.
(I have some corsair vengeance ram and a 1TB Samsung spin point, 32 mb cache hard drive)

YOUR BASKET
1 x PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 6990 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £539.99
1 x Silverstone Fortress 2 FT02B-W Windowed Gaming Case - Black £209.99
1 x Asus P8Z68 DELUXE GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £199.99
1 x Intel Core i5-2500 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £167.99
1 x OCZ Agility 3 120GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive (AGT3-25SAT3-120G) £128.99
2 x OCZ ZX Series 850W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £124.99 (£249.98)
1 x Samsung SH-B123L/BSBP 12x BluRay ROM / 16x DVD±RW Lightscribe SATA-II Optical Drive - Black (OEM) £54.98
Total : £1,578.55 (includes shipping : £22.20).

Get an i5-2500K CPU so you can overclock it.

Might be worth waiting for 7900's cards rather than splashing a third of your budget on the 6990.

I'd go for a Crucial M4, Corsair Force 3 or Samsung over the OCZ Agility.

Case is personal preference but there are cheaper ones that will do the job just as well.

Why do you need two PSU's?

Assuming that you purposely selected the i5-2500, I think a mucher cheaper motherboard would be more appropriate.

No RAM?

Also buy retail BD-ROM as it'll come with playback software.

Just add a GPU you want. Worthwhile waiting until Monday before deciding. If you want to push your overclock a little bit more then consider getting a Thermalright Silver Arrow for around £55.

How much more money would it cost me to over clock the i5 ? and I acidently added the 2 power supplies.
I have never over clocked in my life, this is my first ever self build.

Overclocking is free but sounds like you need to do a bit of reading first. The spec above will allow you to overclock as it has the -K- version of the CPU.

Check out some youtube videos and guides on building a system. Such as this one for starters.

What will your PC be used for? Presumably gaming. What resolution is your monitor?

I would seriously reconsider the 6990. Read some reviews of the 7900 cards and go from there. Also I suspect a cheaper motherboard will be fine, how about the Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 as I doubt you will ever really make the most of even the MSI Z68A-GD65 and it'll still be good for overclocking to 4.5GHz without too much trouble.

I have one issue though , the fins on my ram might interfere with my fan.

1280X1024 19 inch moniter.

yeah gaming.

Which fan do you recommend ?

What RAM do you have at the minute?

If you don't want to buy new low profile RAM then consider a closed loop water cooling unit such at the Antec Kuhler 620 or Corsair H60.

Surely if your considering a 6990 your getting a new monitor too? A 6990 for 1280x1024 is laughable!

I have that problem with my heatsink and ram, means I can't use the first ram slot, so I'm stuck using numbers 2 and 4

Personally, I would recommend getting a better monitor. With a PC as good as this is going to be, you want the output to look as sweet as possible.

The monitor will come a little while later , once I can afford it.
and I have 16 GBs of corsair vengeance ram.

PS, I will wait and see what the 7000 series has to offer, the 6990 will be a place holder for now.
I can wait.

Sounds pretty good , Why did you change your motherboard recommendation ?

  • Cheaper
  • In stock
  • In all honesty and no offence intended it sounded like you'd probably not use the features of the MSI Z68A-GD65. The Gigabyte is still a great board and will do SLI/Crossfire and will cope with overclocking to 4.5GHz without breaking a sweat.

If i want to add say a sound card , tv card and a killer network card later on, will it have the 3 extra slots for them ?

I will need to add thermal paste to the price aswell.
Do I need any specific tools ?
will a Philips screw driver do the trick ?

Small Phillips screw driver is fine.

Thermal paste will come pre-applied to the Antec Kuhler and is pretty decent stuff too.

Plenty of expansion slots, (link)

1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
* For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot.
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x8 (PCIEX8)
* The PCIEX8 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16 slot. When the PCIEX8 slot is populated, the PCIEX16 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.

(All PCI Express x16 slots conform to PCI Express 3.0 standard.)
* To support PCI Express 3.0, you must install an Intel 22nm CPU.

3 x PCI Express x1 slots
(All PCI Express slots conform to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
2 x PCI slots

Thanks dude , that is one nice motherboard.
all that is left now is a decision on the graphics card, hopefully the new ones wont be to expensive.
I can go 150 over budget if need be.

Hi, just my two cents on this build. You're shelling the best part of two grand into a build, and you have a really, really bad monitor. You should seriously drop £200-300 into a decent Dell or Asus monitor that gives a 1920*1080 output, so that you can actually push your parts to their limits.

You honestly can't consider a 6990 and then say you'll get the monitor when "you can afford it". I would rather get 560 Ti/570 and a monitor than have a 6990 running at 1280*1024.

Some decent monitors:

I will be getting a monitor soon after the PC, about 3 weeks after the pc, I don't mind the 3 week wait.
