Need some advice blurry image at 100% view on canon 450D

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice.
I've just bought a canon 450D and it's the first time i've dabbled in any type of photography (but im thorughly enjoying myself tinkering away).

I've set up a mini studio in our office so im just finding my feet regarding lighting.

The problem is that after i've taken a shot (in raw) with the Canon 450D if I view the image at 100% on my PC the image looks blurred and not sharp at all, I would have thought it should be quite sharp and then of course pixalette if I zoom in further than 100%

If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated but please remember in totally new to this (im planning on trying to find some local photography courses to go on)

could be 1 of 3 things

1 - camera shake, try using a tripod
2 - Lens is not sharp
3 - Depth of field, the lens might be front focusing

IT's mostly likely 1 and/or 2.
 
Chances are it's 2 then as use a tripod (thats me in the picture)
The lens was just the one that came with the camera in the Canon bundle

One thing I have noticed though (sorry should have mentioned this before) is that if I shoot RAW + JPG at the same time the raw file seems a lot clearer (for example you could read the marlboro logo on the shirt pocket)

Can you recommend a new lens for the Canon 450D (bearing in mind i've only got about 10ft to play with from camera to model)
 
this may sound daft and i could be completely wrong, but are you setting the self timer then running in front of the camera before it goes off or using a remote release? Because if using self timer, if i'm not mistaken it will be focusing on the wall behind you and not on you.
 
I did use the self timer on that one but it does the same on some shots where i've got the model already in front of the camera (sorry not at the office at the moment to upload it as an example)

i would say that too

there is nothing at all that looks sharp in the photo

i doubt its camera shake as 1/30 on a tripod should be fine and theres no obvious movement blur

at f9 the shot should be quite sharp

what lens do you have? it looks very poo whatever it is
 
Just go outside in good light, take a few pictures of a sign or something with some small print/different textures, at ISO 100, a few different Fstops, and a shutter speed of over 1/400th sec, checking your images then will quickly determine whether its the lens/technique/method. Difficult to determine at 1/30th with a pic of someone standing up because they will be moving no matter how hard they try,

I must admit, the image does look badly out of focus/blurred, it could be a combination of many things.
 
I'd say that there is nothing that much wrong with that shot, if you printed it out at 6x4 you'd be happy with it :)

But...

1. RAW always requires some sharpening
2. 1/30 isn't really fast enough for people
3. the kit lens isn't the sharpest (it's good value though)

if you're going to do pixel peeping you'll have to invest money in sharper glass and up the shutter speed.

1. that shot has no detail in it that could be sharpened, i would be upset if my shots had such poor iq

2. your right 1/30 isnt really ideal for people but the shot shows no sign of motion blur and the background (which isnt moving) looks very soft, and i mean soft and not o.o.f.

3. aye the origional 18-55 kit lens is pants, i got rid of mine after only a few uses, waste of glass it was tbh
 
Have you tried processing the photos in CS?

Photos in general would be photoshoped in someway, i bet if you resize it and crop it and put in a few filters it will be better.

that would not do much, it may make it slightly better but in reality the iq of that shot is very poor and as the saying goes you cant polish a turd

and you really cant expect him to do that to all the other shots that will turn out as poor, he might as well have a cheap p&s if his shots are going to end up looking like they were shot with one


i would take/send that lens back to the shop and have it replaced as its really not upto par
