Need some advice on upgrade for a mates pc please!!!

He has a Microstar Mobo MS-6507 which I think supports a max of 444 FSB and is Socket 478

Currently he has a P4 2.2 with 512MB of DDR PC2100 RAM and he has an Nvidia Geoforce FX 5700LR GPU

So he has a budget of around £175 to do some simple upgrades, he surfs, listens to music and plays some games, tho he has an Xbox 360 so it doesnt need to be the best performing gaming PC and for £175 it aint gonna be.

I was thinking of just upgrading the CPU and GPU but what I dont know know is can I get P4 3.2 to work I can get them for £52 on here so that would be a cheap upgrade right? Then rather than touch the Ram I thought upgrade the GPU to an ATI X1950 they are £139 on here and have 512MB RAM.

Main question is will this work, will it deliver any noticeable differenace and what else should.could I do for this money to get a noticeable difference in performance?

I appreaciate this is a big ask but I really really need you help, outta touch now with what is what, help! :eek: :confused:
 
Moving to a better P4 is pointless, it's like moving from crap to crap.

That machine is lacking two things to be a half decent machine

RAM (Another 512-1gb will help a stupidly large amount), about £50.
GPU as you said. A second hand AGP card to the tune of £100 will bring that system up to adequate a second hand 6800/x800 or better on the members market here/auction site.

That'll play every recent game at a pretty decent level or detail/resolution (There are exceptions, some games just love cpu power)
 
I did some research, the mobo will support anything upto an Intel Northwood 2.4, takes only SD RAM & the graphics is AGP so x1950 will not fit.

I would up the budget a bit & get an C2D E6300/E4300, an ASRock mobo with onboard VGA & 1GB DDR2 Value RAM

Do some more research, the x1950 comes in many many shapes and sizes.
