Hi Guys

Recently bought a Shuttle SD30G2 for a bargain price but it only came with a Pentium 4 3.06GHz jobbie, so that needed replacing

With Christmas upon us, i generously received an E6600 from the girlfriend (Good lass!)

Have it plumbed in now, but i've noticed a few things:

1. When hammering my old CPU, the cooler fan went nuts. It got faster, but when really hammering it, another stage on cooling came in (Really loud). Now with this new CPU, this doesnt happen. In fact, the fan stays quite constant, which leads me onto point 2...

2. I was stretching the E6600 legs (not overclocking) to see what it could do, but i made sure to keep an eye on the temps via SiSoftware Sandra (Only program i could think of). According to that, my CPU temp is 89oC! Surely this can't be right, can it?

Can you guys think of any decent CPU temp monitoring programs? I've tried real temp, which seems to be a little better. Hammered before and it got upto 62oC. Are these temps a little/very high?
Why doesn't my fan go crazy like it used to?

Cheers

speedfan i think is the best, if not pc probe if you have an asus board
my temps for Q6600 are about 32/33 idle
just go on the basis of that

Thanks CoxyBoy 123

Apparently temp 1 is -55oC, temp 2 is 90oC, temp 3 is 42oC, core 0 is 35oC and core 1 is 36oC

Something doesn't seem right here... haha

When i ran some HD stuff, the core temps shot up to 55oC and a little flame icon next to it.

Fans are still on constant low speed although the air out the back isn't too warm. Should i try reseating the heatsink? Problem is its a stupid plate that sits on the CPU with 3 pipes leading to a radiator on the back, not a traditional heatsink.

ignore the little flame, its not right haha
55 does seem a lil high tbh, highest i want idle is 40. but if 55 is under load that is very good.
the only thing i can think of is that if you havent applied the thermal paste correctly and thats why its high, and especially the one that is 90c haha
hmmm, what cpu cooler do you have??

yeah 55 was when HD'ing it a little. 1080p District 9 sample.

I did youtube videos on how to remove/reapply the thermal paste, so i was careful, but it was my first time haha. Just burst my thermal paste cherry. Removed old paste, cleaned with alcohol, applied a very thin layer of Arctic Silver 5 and spread with a credit card-type object.

i think the 90oc and -55oc sound a little out to me haha. What could these mean?

Cooler is the standard Shuttle SD30g2 cooler. http://www.ixbt.com/mainboard/image...luxe/shuttle-sn68ptg6-deluxe-cpu-cooler-2.jpg

Very similar if not identical to that

hmm i cant think of another reason why the temps are so different cos it sounds like you did it right :/
go into your bios and look at cpu temps there, see what they say :)

Right this is what you do.

1. go in bios and set the cpu/computer shutdown temp at about 70.

2. stress the cpu and have both programs open if ones says like 62 and 89 (in your case) you know the one sayin 89 isn;t right.

3. play around with the shutdown temp until it will prove that one of the programs is reading correctly.

You've got to remember this method will take a while.

i'd say update the bios... maybe, as it's a newer chip the bios on the board doesn't 'fully' support it?

also, i use everest, and coretemp to check temps, these programs are the best for it.

good luck, and merry xmas :)

I did (briefly) try to update the bios, but its harder than i thought :( haha

Could someone run through the a basic procedure please?

I think i have found the latest BIOS here http://global.shuttle.com/download03.jsp?PI=644&PL=1

Question is, how do i load it? :S I assume i must use AWDFLASH, but it only works under dos. How do i go about loading it so i can use it? Copy to USB stick then boot off it?

Cheers for all the help fellas

put the file onto a usb thumb drive, stick it in a powered usb port, boot the computer into bios, then (hopefully) there will be a bios flash utility; if not, then you need to see if there's a utility on the manufacturer website.

what mobo is it in there btw?

Couldn't find a BIOS Flash utility in the BIOS :( its a Phoenix make BIOS i think, if that helps.

I put the Flash utility and the new bios file on a usb stick and tried to boot from it in the hope that it would work, but typically it didnt. BOOTMGR missing came up.

There is a manufacturer utility to flash the bios, but for this version, its DOS-only. I've tried the windows version but it didn't work.

How do i go about using the DOS-only flash utility to flash my bios?

tbh you never want to flash a bios in windows, it's just asking for problems :o

google dos flash guide; sorry i can't help much more cos every board i've used (pretty much all asus/abit) have had a flash utility, so never needed to do it any other way.

i'm sure some of the other sages of knowledge on here will fill your brain with nibbles :p

If you're getting one core hotter than the others, try applying the paste more evenly and reseating it. It will also run quite hot in a tiny shuttle case, but anything under 60degrees is fine tbh. You don't mention what CPU cooler you have, maybe try fitting a bigger one in if possible which blows out towards the back of the shuttle.

I'm hazy on anything pre c2d, but I have a suspicion the 3.06ghz socket 775 chip is from the group known for running very hot indeed. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the stock cooler for it is thoroughly overspecified for the new processor.

If the processor doesn't switch off under (heavy) load, and preferably the heatsink doesn't burn you if you touch it, you're fine. It's been quite a while since I've seen positive comments about speedfan, I personally wouldn't trust software known to give imaginary readings with pictures of flames beside them. Hwmonitor, referenced above, is likely to be more than sufficient.

Updating the bios may be required, but if it's not turning off under load you're probably fine. DOS can look pretty scary if you're not used to it. You can run it from floppy disk (tried and tested) or usb stick (wouldn't work for me last time I tried it).

edit: intel processor finder confirms. Your old processor had a thermal design spec of 84W, the new one of 65W. Temperatures aren't going to be any problem at all unless you really cocked up the installation.

You're right Jon, the 6600's do run very hot, especially in such a tiny case. The only answer really is a much better aftermarket cooler, but a bit of research is needed to see if it will fit in the shuttle.

Pardon? I'm certain I'm right, since I'm using Intel as a source, but I'm afraid I'm saying exactly the opposite to that.

The 3.06ghz one that used to run at some reasonable temperature threw out roughly 85W of heat. The new e6600 wastes around 65W. The heatsink now has to deal with roughly 3/4 what it had to before, so it's far better than is needed already. An aftermarket cooler isn't even remotely required.
