Hi all, not sure about this,

I dont want to fill my car with crap, but at the same time I cant wait for something to be delivered from the internet. I need it done tomorrow.

What coolant is good to use for a MK5 Golf GT TDi 140? which is G12+ (apparently now G12++) I desperataly need to flush my system this weekend.

Live in Caldicot, near Chepstow and the Severn Bridge, also work near cardiff, what makes you think you have seen me :p?

I have been topping it up with water over the summer and at the moment I keep getting coolant level light every so often coming up on dash, so I thought rather than looking at the worst I will do a coolant flush, put some fresh in, I think my coolant system has been over run by water!, and its winter, which means cold starts.

Why have you had to top it up with water all the time?

As I said, the level keeps dropping? not sure if this is to do with it being some of the water I put in over the summer, either its evaporating or dispursing somewhere, if I flush the system and put some proper stuff in I want to see how it settles and levels.

The cooling system should never lose any fluid, even if it's just water in it. I suggest you do a presure test first find the leak repair and then flush. Could possibly have headgasket issues? Any ideas where it's leaking out?

just a brain wave, bit too far away for me to have seen you mate :) wishful thinking?

what year is your MK5? some of the TDIs have porous head cylinders crop up after a while, could be that?
when was your water pump changed last? the pump seals are known to go some of the TDIs.
any white powdery like stuff around any of the coolant system pipes? that will indicate a leak.
how much does it leak over a certain time?

Not sure, the cambelt was changed at around 70k, and the waterpump should have been changed at that time although its hard to tell, I will need to go through history and check to see if this was done.

I knew this was going to turn in to a bigger problem :(

If I top it up, id say it takes a couple of weeks to lose it, unless I hoon it then it will obviously be quicker.

I went to Motorworld the other day and they suggested Carplan G12+ red stuff, could I use this or should I steer clear?

what makes you think it was changed the same time? ideal to get it done the same time though :) vw will have records of what was done if you had the work done by them.

so all of the coolant goes within a few weeks? thats bad :( definitely look at the coolant system for powder deposits.
any damp patches in the morning on the ground? try some cardboard under the engine bay.

if its pink (or purple) and has g12 and vw standards on it it'll be fine, id stay well clear and not dream of putting anything else in her though.
you want to get rid of that water in there asap :)

The G12 stuff I seen in some of the shop's were red :S

I am going to ask about tomorrow, luckily company I work for supply WAN connectivity/site to site VPN and colo to most of the UK motor factors. So I may phone up a few in the morning and check around and see if I can get a discount :p

If it is leaking in to cylinders, whats the damage in terms of cost? i really do not need big bills at the moment :(

Worst case it's going to be around £500 to have the head skimmed and new headgasket. But rather than masking the problem I would get it presure tested. Find out where the leak is and then go from there.

The coolant is in a sealed system. As you may have gathered from my question... It shouldn't be using any! As mentioned above you have a leak or problem somewhere. Get it checked out.
