Yep, typical setup with 1ssd and 1 conventional and 1 optical - but it would be running to near capacity - but you make a good point.

I've always erred on having 100w/150w plus in my pocket - so my PSU last approx. 7 years - well longer as I pass them on. I've put this down to quality brands combined with running them at cruise rather than flat out under load.

When forum members give PSU advice, myself included, they tend to err on overcompensation - mine for the above reasons - but I sometimes think the GPU/CPU market has their hands in the PSU market too with their recommendations to sample testers...

Just out of interest what do you have stulid - minimum or overkill for silence and less stress?

To not know your PSU - i'm guessing you upgrade a lot, regardless of it being one of the more boring components.

I have 3 rigs and can name all of the PSUs - mind you I have no shrouds - but I don't have glass either. But I will admit to having my head stuffed in them every other month... ;)

for the time boing the 660 i have just now, eventually itll get an upgrade but no immediate plans as im not a heavy gamer
 
Personally, I would get the Bitfenix Whisper M Series 750W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply with the 7 year guarantee, that micky recommended, or the Super Flower 650W if you think you're not going to change much in the future.

Stulid is right about the 550W having enough power to run a 1080ti - but I like my PSUs to purr and be relaxed under load. As a result I bump up the wattage of the PSU, with my builds, and thanks to the minimum stress/heat this achieves (and as much by luck i'm sure) I haven't had a quality PSU pop yet. And although the 550W would technically run a Ryzen clock and a 1080ti - I, personally, couldn't bring myself to run it on a premium build - i'd want the reassurance that the PSU was gently accelerating to 60/70% of its capabilities under load rather than revving up to near it's optimum. The fan kicking in more often would be factor too for me (but they are designed to do this - I just don't like to run them like this).

It's a fanatics forum - so you're going to get differing views - even with PSUs - but we all have our personal reasons for recommending them. Not least considering the buyer's budget.

With that in mind, if you can afford it, again, personally I would get the 750w (cheaper, great reviews and lots of headroom for future upgrades/perhaps next build) or the 650w (excellent quality) - but if funds are limited and you think you'll be sticking with the 660 then the 550W would be enough and again is an excellent PSU.

It reviews well with a solid guarantee - are they hit and miss with quality since launch?

Your 'barge pole' reference makes it sound like it's in the same league as the old Hiper Type M PSU (they were awful when diagnosing possible problems if one was in the build) - I'm looking at it with sceptical eyes now. Off to read some more...

Can't argue with Seasonic quality - soldering quality on parts alone is reassuring along with proven reliability. And been around since Jesus was a toddler.

I used to recommend Corsair by default, in the past, but they have too many flavours now that aren't up to scratch - so worry about recommending them incase people confuse models.

Warned you OP - extreme differences of opinion - but it helps fine tune your choices to hopefullly the best components combined with bang for buck...

Its just that the Bitfenix is made by CWT and so Seasonic > CWT.

A couple of years ago when I was the forum rep for Bitfenix and the first lot of Fury PSUs were released they got a bit of a slating, although those units were made by FSP.
 
Fair enough - I've seen similar things in the past.

That XFX is solid knowing it's a seasonic at only ~£8 more - good to know.

Yep, the skill is reading reviews/forums and learning/remembering which brand and model use them. (For example you wouldn't buy the cheap XFX 400w over the Super Flower 350 - can get very confusing)

Are you getting the XFX 750 over the Super Flower 650? If so, your build is complete?

EDIT: i may use that XFX in my next build (but will look into user load noise) - I was going to go down the BeQuiet route but that unit reviews well. I've been caught out by XFX a couple of times with QC in the past (mainly GPUs). I try hard for these things not to make me biased against all their latest releases but it's the once bitten syndrome... (Although i still find it hard to buy Asus - but that's because their CS is total garbage)

well as of right now, yes im thinking going with the xfx. im decided on cpu and ram. mobo im thinking the gigabyte one asn the asrock taichi is out of stock and case im thinking the grey Phantek 400s with the plastic window but not a million percent sure on them quite yet
