Need some help upgrading my rig

Hi guys,

I have a 2009 OcUK Desktop build:

i7 920 @ 3.6ghz
EX58-UD3R Motherboard
6gb DDR3 Ram (as supplied by OcUK)
Gainward GTX295 GPU

This has been an excellent and reliable rig and I've only recently started to feel the need to upgrade. Ideally I want to spend between £400 - £500 for a decent ram and GPU upgrade (I figure the i7 CPU doesn't need to be changed).

I just need some advice as I'm not entirely sure what ram to go for (DDR3 Dual channel?) and what GPUs will be supported (I think the mobo supports PCI-Express 2.0 x16)

I'd like to stick with Nvidia on the GPU front.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Gaming mostly (BF3, Skyrim, Guild Wars 2). BF3 is the only game where I struggle a bit now. I'd like to be able to set it for ultra and get a decent FPS. It's still a very capable rig but I am starting to sense it could do with a few improvements, maybe only on the GPU front?

+1 for the 670.

Although if you don't want to spend that much you could look at a 7950. At present they are great value and come with three free games.

Have you tried to OC the CPU a little more, somewhere to near 4GHz?

Id just upgrade the GPU, and you probably dont need to spend you full budget.

A list of comparison of different card with BF3 on ultra, id probaby go for the nvidia 670 based on what other have said on these forums.

Thanks, looks like that's the way to go.

Looking at: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-095-GI

In the specification it says "1x 8-Pin & 1x 6-Pin PCI-E Connectors required". Is this something the EX58-UD3R has?

Also, do the recent nvidia cards still require S/PDIF output to the Motherboard for audio via HDMI?

They are the power connectors from the PSU, My Windforce 680 came with some Molex to PCI power adapters.

What PSU do you have?

My Windforce 680 does not have any connectors for them on the side like my old 260 did, although I could have missed them.

E: Oh and £20 cheaper, better clocks out of the box, great cooler and UK based RMA service.

Think I have a Corsair TX 850w

I read somewhere that more recent Nvidia cards have on board sound for HDMI output so the SP/DIF thing is probably a legacy feature of older models.

Your PSU should have the right cables, my TX750 has 4 6+2 pin PCI-e connectors so I would guess that a TX850 has the same.
