So I've recently upgraded my broadband to sky, I say recently but its more like 6 months, anyway, the router they have provided me with is absolutely SHOCKING. I can barely recieve any signal upstairs. This led me to pop down to my local pc world this morning, asked a few of the techies there, and they showed me this, the TP Link TP-PA411KIT powerline adapter kit. Now the price in store was £79.99 if I can remember correctly, so its abit funny seeing it almost near half that online. Anyway, here is my problem, the guy said I have to hard-wire one of the ethernet cables from the router to one of the powerlines, and i can place the other powerline anywhere upstairs. I did ask him do i have to wire the other one to a pc? Because its mainly going to be used as a wifi connection for my ipad/iphone etc. he said thats not necessary.. but I'm having a hard time believing that, because they both have ethernet ports underneath.. was wondering if someone could give me some insight on this.
Thank you.

One of the adapters needs to be from the router/switch this will be the source to connect to the network.

The other adaptor which you can plug upstairs has an Ethernet port which can plug into another computer or another wireless router (this is what I do, turn of a few settings on that wireless router) and its basically extended the network.

Router ---ethernet---- Powerline ~~~~~~~ Powerline --Ethernet ---- remote device

If you want the network shared at the remote end you'll need a device to share it. A switch will do a good job of sharing Ethernet connections while a wireless access point will share wifi.

There are homeplugs with wireless access points built in available but they are a dying breed.

What do you guys think of this? Will I have any problems once its set up, e.g what if im within range of my original router, which device will my pc connect to? the powerline or the router

I would go on amazon and just buy normal ones for like £30 and then buy a wireless router, probably another 30.

Connect your PC as it is now, there should be ports on the router left so plug a cable from router to adaptor.

Upstairs plug a cable from adaptor to new router. Set it up as wireless mode or whatever so dhcp etc is turned off. Then sorted.

Your devices will just connect to the wireless router with strongest signal, just put each one on a different channel.

Welcome Ladiesman ;)

That powerline kit is basically what I was talking about on e38, as oli said, get 2 normal ethernet powerline adapters (the ones you posted first) and then get yourself a wireless access point, no need to get another router though.

You need to remove those competitor links though mate :)
