Sorry I didnt report back, turned out to be the thermostat. I couldnt get to it as I was away with work in the end so she took it to a garage. £70 including labour so not too bad.

afaik antifreeze is actually inhibitive to the coolant properties, just need it there for the obvious reasons

The not so obvious reason is that it stops the metal errosion.

She's topping it up with water. Not replacing the whole system.

My point was - it wont require flushing the water out to replace it with 'coolant'. Just add some anti freeze.

Also, metal doesn't rust.

Depends how much coolant has been lost I guess, also, if they bother to replace the water later with coolant - many people forget this minor detail....

As for it does not rust - I think you know what I mean you pedantic git!!!
