I've got a 2001 Golf GTI and last week I had to have my catalytic converter changed after the warning light came on. It was changed on wednesday last week.

Yesterday when I was driving home the car suddenly had a massive loss of power and started jolting slightly as if it was misfiring constantly. The same warning then started flashing and I had to nurse it the extra half mile home.

After reading some stuff online I'm pretty sure this problem is at least linked to the catalytic converter, if thats not the problem itself. Do I have a case to take it back to the same place and get them to sort it without me paying out again?

Don't know a great deal about cars so don't wanna get robbed of any unnecessary money

I guess it depends who told you/what made you change the CC in the first place.

Did you take it to a garage and say "the engine management light is on, diagnose the problem and make it go away" or did you say "the engine management light is on, replace the CC please".

If it's the former, I would take it back and tell them the problem still persists and their diagnosis must have been inaccurate. Therefor I would I expect to either not pay for any additional work or for some sort of recompense on the cost of the CC replacement as it seems as though it wasn't required.

If it's the latter, you probably don't have much of a leg to stand on and I would expect to pay more for the problem to be correctly diagnosed and fixed, safe in the knowledge that you have a shiny new CC that won't fail for a long time to come.

However, if the old, broken CC has caused some other component to fail then I don't think scenario one would really work because they will be going through a process of elimination and started with the most obvious thing first...

Cat probably failed due to overheating but that was caused by another fault (like lambda or MAF)
So in effect they will tell you the cat was faulty, which it probably was, however they didn't fix the root cause, so you will now have to fork out for that as well.
Enjoy. :D
