Sold my new contract phone (LG Viewty) on eBay, sold it, waited.. then got a message from the person who bought it who said, and I quote:

"hi yes it has but i am locked out the phone and it is asking for PUK code

i have read to get this code i need 2 ring orange but orange ask me what sicurity (pin code) was given when you set up the phone but as i didnt set the phone up i will need this code thxs dandraz"

Now it's my understanding that the only reasons it would ask you for a PUK code would be A) you've put your SIM pin in too many times and it's kicked you out or B) you're trying to put a sim card in a phone that's locked to a different network?

It may just be this is an innocent case of durrr, but I'm just a bit concious. The phone is locked to a network and I've sent a message to the buyer saying as such (although it was clearly stated in the listing).

Or is this actually something very common and I'm being a plumb?

PUK codes are for when you have entered in your SIM PIN too many times. I dont think its a major issue if you have to call orange though, O2 give it you off there site and i think T-Mobile do as well IIRC.

But I can't call Orange? He's put his own SIM in the phone see, so it would be his own SIM and my old handset. Is that where the problem lay?

Ohhh well in that case then he needs to ring his Provider and get them to give him the PUK code. Or at least thats my understanding of it

Yes, a PUK code is when the SIM is locked after entering the PIN incorrectly too many times.

HE needs to call Orange, and I don't know why they need the original PIN from the sim, again though, this is his problem.
