Need some speakers!

I need some speakers for my PC for general use (music and games). I am not a massive audiophobe, but like my music to sound good-I definately notice the difference between hearing my songs on my Cowon D2 and my cheapy Harmon Kardon speakers! Likewise I would like the sound from games to have a little more oomph than they currently do.

I have around £70 to spend. I don't have a soundcard in my PC and was therefore looking at the Logitech Z 10s, which apparently use a USB connection and therefore don't need one as much as those which use 3.5mm jacks. Is this a good choice? Are Creative's T40s better suited to me, and can anyone think of anything else which might work well?

I would have liked to have gone the amp/bookshelf speaker route but simply cant afford it, and also figure that with no soundcard it may not fulfill its potential. Are the Z10s my next best bet?

Hi manic111,

I have Z10's and can't really fault them. Good sound, good bass and go pretty loud for realatively small speakers.

That said the creatives T20/40 range are also great speakers.

My GF uses T20's on her PC and although they don't dig as deep as the Z10's they are just as musical and very capable.

I would imagine the T40's would provide a similar punchy presentation so you probably can't lose either way.

The logitech z4 are good but i must STRESS stay away if you are in to rock yes they can cope if tweaked correctly with winamp and enhancer plugin however for dance / rap / electronic is where they shine because they are all bass and treble.
But as ever like most pc speakers lack midrange but pretty good for 50 notes.

OK, cheers-I am more into what you would probably term midrange music, so I think the Z4s may be ones to miss. How much better are the T40s than the T20s? I hear different things from different people.

I have both the T20's and T40's, and i can't really tell the difference, but then i dont really use them at higher volumes. I'd highly recommend any of these two, but seeing as the T20's are cheaper i'd be inclined to go with them.

I bought some T20's as hooking up my decent hi-fi to the PC is impractical at the moment, and Im running on onboard sound, they take a little setting up to get the tone right, they tend to bit a bit bright/shrill if your not carefull.

Youll never get room shaking bass, but they are good for what they are, ie; good quality PC speakers, with great stereo image, clarity and a decent punch for the size of the cones.

They are very musical and dynamic when set up right, and do sound very good up to fairly high volumes (for PC speakers).

I would rate them as a halfway house between 'Proper' speakers and typical PC junk speakers. certainly not bad for the money but you will need to tune your mediaplayers EQ a little to stop them from sounding harsh on the treble.

Z10's are brilliant apart from lack of bass, they have a lot for there size but not enough if you like abit of hip hop or anything like house music or stuff like that.

I sold them in the end, using Z5500's now and I notice how better the SQ is on the Z10's compared to the Z5500.

Awesome-I've actually nicked an old cheap amp (Technics SU-8022) and some Aiwa speakers off my dad for now, and then will spend a decent amount on a decent amp and speakers when I get the money rather than going at it half-arsed now.
