I've just bought an oem copy of Vista home premium. The only thing i'm worried about is issues it might have with some of my hardware. Most of it is recent-ish.
Here's the specs
amd64 4200+ x2.
asus a8n-sli deluxe
seagate barracuda 500gb hd.
xfx nvidia 6800gt.
samsung dvdrw.
creative sb audigy 1. this is the only thing that i'm worried about, i've heard that vista had issues with some soundblasters before

Any advice would be appreciated :)

It would be fine on that system, just bear in mind that OEM as you'll probs know, ties to one motherboard - though you can phone activate on multiple machines ;)

But you should have no problems with that configuration, what do you use it for out of interst?

EDIT: Most drivers are sorted out now, althoguh i don't use a sound card so i can't tell ya - sorry :(

How much memory does your system have?
Also, I think the latest sound drivers from, Creative have fixed the issues.

Just make sure all your drivers are the latest and you shouldn't have a problem at all. :)

I'm using 1.5gb of ram at the mo in 3 512mb sticks. I can't really afford to get bigger ddr stuff at the mo.

I mainly use the pc for net stuff and playing games. The only reason i got vista is because i had to get a new hd anyway. I thought i might as well get vista cos i'll probs have to get it eventually.

1.5GB should be okay. But in all honesty, if you can maybe sell a 512mb stick and buy a 1GB it would help out Vista a lot more. :)

Internet is fine, however games may slow down a little bit, depending on the type of game of course.

Ahh, thats ok. If the 1.5gb is too slow i can always get more ram next month. I've got another question as well. Will i have to install the amd dual core drivers for the cpu? I had to for xp but wasn't sure if i had to for vista.

Dual core drivers are not required in vista as far as im aware:) also why not just grab another stick of 512 and put that in, ive got 4 sticks of 512 kingston value ram in my a8n32 sli and they get a healthy 5.5 out of 5.9 on vista scoring:D

Yeah, i think i'll do that. It just sucks that ddr is more expensive than ddr2 now.

I've just read in another thread that oem vista is tied to the mobo. Does this still apply if the oem vista is brand new and the mobo is a 3 year old asus?

Yeah basically the license specifies that you use it with your intended mobo, and it cannot be transferred if you upgrade. If the mobo dies a death then they will re-activate/give you a new one.

For the RAM if you turn off the poncy Vista aero effects (it still looks fine after) you free up a lot of RAM.

I've read a lot of reports of problems with Vista SP1 and sound drivers (i.e it disables them) so you should just need to re-install them.

Yeah the price off ddr suks, also i had my copy of oem HP installed on an msi motherboard and then picked up the asus board on a well known auction site then reinstalled vista, had to ring microsoft for reactivation. i juz told them my other motherboard blew up (naughty i know) :) but they reactivated it. i also had to phone for reactivation after MB driver update from nvidia.

Thats ok, i think i'll take the risk of installing it on this mobo. I'm not planning to upgrade for a while yet so it should be ok. Tbh, i'll probably just buy a new system when this one gets too old, they're cheap enough these days.

It's not really piracy though is it? Telling people to download from a torrent site, yeah - but if MS are willing to reactivate OEM on a new mobo, when they're told it's a new mobo, that's just their discretion isn't it?

Me? never, did i not say my msi MB blew up :) i bought my vista copy legally ive not made copys or selling copies ect ect so it aint piracy in my eyes to change my MB if blew up or not it may be breaking the eula which means in affect that MY install of vista may not be truley licenced blah blah im not sure on this. But it aint piracy.Correct me if im wrong.

Oh PLEASE not the whole EULA/OEM argument again LOL I started a thread about this a week or so ago and it turned into a monster thread :D Basically if MS have given you permission to reactivate knowing it's a new/replacement mobo I don't see how you can be in breach of the EULA. The EULA was between you and MS in the first place, and if they're willing to renegotiate terms on the phone by reactivating for you after a failed mobo, I don't see the problem personally - MS sure didn't, obviously!
