Hi

I am running Ubuntu 8.1 2.6.27.11 with the latest version of VirtualBox from the repository.

VirtuaBox itself starts but when i try and run my new vm (winXP) i get the following error message......

Virtual machine 'WinXP' has terminated unexpectedly during startup.
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Machine Interface: IMachine {ea6fb7ea-1993-4642-b113-f29eb39e0df0}

I have googled this but not found anything i understood or was relevent. Any suggestions as to what i could do to fix this?

many thanks

Even with that error the machine should still run. What happens exactly? The VM doesn't start at all?

hi

whats happened so far is:

i start virtualbox from a terminal (the item in the menu doesn't work)
virtual box starts and i set up a winxp VM
i try and run the VM but then get the error mentioned above

thanks

Have you made sure that you are part of the vboxusers group? Does your VM use VT-x or AMD-VT (hardware virtualisation)?

hi

if i look at my user account it says enabled to use virtualbox

and

for the other question there is only one tick box for both (which was ticked)

is VirtualBox dependent on a particular kernal, or are there maybe otyher thinsg i need to install to get it too work?

thanks

Make sure hardware virtualisation is enabled in the BIOS of your host system.

damn - thought this might sort it as its a newish build - but no, it was already enabled

there was something called MAX CPUID value limit that was disabled - is this anything to do with virtualisation?

thanks

Nope, not to do with virtualisation.

Afraid I'd be a little stumped with your problem. Have you tried the non-free Virtualbox to see if that exhibits the same problem (or just a different version of virtualbox). Perhaps your issue is version specific.
