Hi everyone

I am looking into buying a headset for my Xbox 360 having just moved to a place where it isn't always convienient to use my 5.1 set up.

My main requirements are:-

1. Needs to be either true 5.1 or an extremely capable 5.1 emulator.

2. Use the Xbox 360's optical out so as to actually take advantage of true 5.1.

3. Be comfy enough for long gaming sessions.

4. Have excellent build quality.

It would be nice if they were wireless however having never used a wireless set of speakers or headset I'm not sure what the lag would be like, battery life etc.

Budget isn't important as it'll be an investment and one that can then be used on the Xbox 720 (or whatever it'll be called) and maybe even on the PS3/4 if it is cross compatible although Playstation compatibility isn't necessary as I use that mainly for Blu-rays and exclusive gaming.

Also Razer have always been my gaming peripheral of choice for PC gaming and for my Xbox so if there are any by those are they any good.

Thanks for the help in advance people. If anyone suggests a headset they use themselves by all means give me some pro's and con's of that set.

I know Turtle beach are supposed to be good, but the down side is your only allowed to use them on that set console you buy them for.

Astro A40 headset and mix amp, heard nothing but good things. Around £230

This. The built and sound quality of the Astro stuff is moons better than any of the TB stuff I've touched. Heck, the boxes it comes in are. :p

If you want, swap the A40 headset with some nice Sennheisers or something (The A40s are still very good). The MixAmp is completely the way to go though.

Astro headsets are OK, and avoid turtlebeach amps if you value voice chat.

By far the best combination is the Astro wired Mixamp with Sennheiser PC360 headset. It's what I have now and is the only choice without compromise imo.

Works well on the PS3 and PC too.

I am in the same boat, and been doing a bit of research.

I am looking at buying Mixamp (this is a must!!) and DT770's. Though if you want a mic, go with the Sens 360.

Avoid '5.1' headsets there a marketing scam really. A mixamp will produce Dolby Headphone with simulates audio positioning tricking your ears into hearing surrond.

Mixamp 5.8
Sennheiser HD650
Zalman clip on mic
7mm cable braiding
10mm heat shrink tubing

Put the braiding over the mic and headphone wires to avoid multi wires everywhere and heat shrink to finish the job. Cuts down the cable clutter and looks awesome.

I have astro mixamp and sennheiser hd600 using a fiio e9 amp to drive the hd600s. Its very good, but I find the turtle beach dss has better sound quality than the astro mixamp, but you lose the ability to have adjustable chat volume unless you use turtle beach headset also.
Theres a dss2 available soon which has the ability to use user defined sound presets to enhance game 5.1. I would like to try that out myself.

Who says that? On the mixamp forums and headfi the PC360+mixamp is universally stated as being the best for gaming.

I've not used the DSS a lot (tried a friends), I'd have definitely put it the other way round though. Each to their own though.

Can i ask the same question for a wireless setup? chat mic included..

Same, but with the wireless MixAmp. :p

and the Corsair HS1A headset.

I'm with Kreeeee on this. A £30 headset against a pair of PC360s? No chance.

You can get more bass out of the dss than the astro, it has bass boost, sounds much better through proper decent headphones, i have both but use the astro for the voice mixer

The Mixamp 5.8 has a bass boost function as well, I really cant see a DSS being much better than what I get out of the Mixamp, plus its only a wired option :(

Does it? Cool. only reason i use the mixamp is the voice mixer. the dss definately sounds better with my headphones, i always use it for non fps or movies. I want to buy the dss2 to see how much I can amplify footsteps with its definable presets. Not available here yet though, I believe its the unit built into all them new mw3 turtle beach sets.

Who cares when youre playing a game that you dont need to rely on sound cues to stay alive, or watching a movie. Love a bit of bass. thats why I have an astro for COD etc. Poor amp for nice trebley footsteps

I'm after a headset

but would really only like to spend ~ £100 as i've already got a 4 figure Home Cinema 5.1 system, but want a headset for late night sessions when this would wake the wife up.

Whats so bad about the Turtle Beach ones ?
