I start my new job tonight - hotel night porter.

I have to work 11pm until 7am. :(

What can I do to help keep me awake all night?

(In before the fapping/illegal substances comments)

If your doing stuff, generally it's not hard to stay awake.

Sadly, I'm told that in an 8 hour shift there is only around two hours worth of work. So between 12-6 I will literally have nothing to do.

My manger tells me it's ok to watch TV, surf the net and even sleep. But for my first few nights I'd like to stay awake.

Its true, I had to work 10am -> 4.30am on friday and as long as you are able to fight the boredom it's fairly easy to stay awake.

I just did my first set of night shifts ever at work and tbh it wasn't hard to stay up when your active. On the quieter points I was watching films or listening to music.

1 tip though is that if you generally drink coffee, don't have any at all the day running up to your shift. That way when you do drink some in your shift, it actually has an effect on you.

Take stuff to read and stuff, just stay busy (dvd player on tv?). But really just sleep. As long as you wake to phone calls or however people would contact you.
And buy a laptop best bet, if you are doing this for any length of time.

Go for a nap before you start work, will make it harder for you to fall asleep once you're at work, generally speaking if you have normal sleeping hours (say 11pm - 6am) you're told not to nap after 3pm as it'll make sleeping at 11pm harder. So get a hours sleep this evening and you should be sorted.

Just keep yourself occupied, something interative.

Games, reading, writing, drawing etc etc whatever floats your boat. Whatever you don't be tempted by cofee or sugary crap, as yes you will stay awake, until you crash.

My advice would be to get a DS and loads of puzzle games, or just games you enjoy.

What does your job actually entail then?

All I need to do is turn up and do a little cleaning/tidying. Then I walk around the hotel doing security checks (making sure widows/doors are closed/locked etc).

After that I basically just have to be available on the off-chance we get late-night guests checking in. And also serve drinks to customers who want them throughout the night.

Easiest (and best paid) job I've ever had. The only challenge is staying awake.

Don't eat anything too heavy, lots of fruit and water are better than coffee.

Get up and move around for ten minutes every hour.

The above - don't get into the habit of taking pills/caffeine/whatever to get you through - it might work the first few times but you'll pay the price.

Keep yourself occupied. If you sit doing nowt you'll get bored/tired. Getting up and walking around is a good idea.

take an airfix kit, jigsaw puzzle with missing peices, or start learning an instrument, you'll have ample time to practice ;)
