Running Q6600 stock and feel that the whole performance is really struggling lately.
I cant remember what memory I have but its 4x 1 gig modules of something quite old.

Can I see drastic performance increase from better memory and what would you advise I go for.

Q6600
IP35
X1800XT

Also is there any programs to run which will tell you what memory I am running.

if its struggling with games the x1800 is the weak link but most 775 mobo's dont like overclocking with all 4 memory banks full to much strain on the NB when it should be consintrating on OC'ing i would say get som 800mhz-1066mhz ram 2x2gb for about £45-£55 probely get about £30 for you old stuff even it is low spec as ddr2 ran is exspensive atm and gettin a 4870 for about £60 (if your PSU can take it) and sell your x1800 for £10-£20 costing your about £65-£75 to upgrade and you'll see a massive diffence in games and other app's

I dont play any games at all. This is a digital darkroom system for applications in the adobe range (photoshop, lightroom)

If you still feel I should do the above then I will unless you think of anything different since seeing these screenshots.

I just want to be able to quickly view, open and edit large sized jpegs, tiffs, raws.

I know upgrading the hdd will help as well but I cant do that just yet.

For those kinds of programs it would be best to either upgrade the processor or overclock it, in which case you would need to use two lanes to get a nice overclock.

change your ram would be an improvement if you have 64bit, and change to an SSD for quick opening. Quite often its' your HD that slows the performance. PS uses a large swap file generally, maybe it's your HD performance slowing it.

Photoshop has to do a lot of accessing maybe a raid to your HD to get things moving which would be cheaper than SSD

You could try starting basic, like reinstalling windows. If you haven't reinstalled in a while then you'll definitely notice a big boost.

Also our CPU is a coveted OC'ing champion, there's tons of people here willing to help you OC your Q6600. Just start up a Q6600 Overclock Log thread and you'll get people dropping in info and giving helpful hints. If you do, make sure you everyone updated with your procedure and results.

SSD's give people a very large boost but it's pricey. I'd see what you can tweak with the instruments you have right now.

For Adobe products and other professional use of gpu's your better of with an Nvidia card.

Nvidia seem to be a little bit more intergrated and advanced in the whole gpu acceleration thing, plus Adobe even say that Nvidia cards are the cards they test and develop for when it comes to gpu acceleration.

(This is coming from an IT proffessional and an ATI fan boi!)

Thanks for the advise so far. I do think I'll get the best memory I can.
Windows is clean on.
as much as I would love to do the SSD drive option its just not going to help me out that much as the drive with the imagery on is 500Gig. I need it secure so I cant risk a raid split option.
I have had this Q6600 at 3.1Ghz but I think the very basic IP35 motherboard and memory are really holding it back.
