OK just took out a new contact and phone with Orange over the weekend, handed PAC or PUK or PAK number over from O2 and everything was fine, love the phone and using it at home and around Southampton is fine, turn up and work and signal is diabolical to nonexistent!

So looks like I will have to return to the shop which should not be an issue however does anyone know how easy it will be to get my number back again, I transferred it as i have that number on business cards and various other places, so will need that? I will call Orange, but stuck at work until late

You cannot return/cancel a contract taken out in a retail store. Your only hope is if you got it online as you have 7 days under the distance selling act to return it.

...but before you give up hope. Does your work have WIFI? Does your phone have UMA technology?

I came from phones 4 u in store, we do have wireless but requires proxy settings and is filtered, so u can't return a phone for having poor or no signal where u work :(

You can't return a contract (or even pay as you go iirc) phone when bought in a retail store (unless maybe its mis-sold).*

You could try connecting to your works wireless if you have UMA technology on your phone but there are no guarantees if there are proxies and filters on it.

* Please note that this is from when I worked in the mobile industry a year ago so it may not be the case now.

OK at home i connect to UMA, not quite sure what it does but i can google in a mo, i thought phones 4 u had a 14 day money back thingy? for UMA to work will it need the proxy settings or does it just use the wireless signal?

My ex had a similar problem a few months ago, she ended up going back into the store and told no, until she argued her point and ended up crying to the bloke, who then eventually swapped her onto another provider (i'm sure that was with P4U as well).

Unfortunately as you are not a young attractive woman i'm not sure you will be so lucky...

You should have done a street check before taking the contract out, I know most networks do this before letting you buy now but thats direct, not sure if P4U do this or would even bother.

gonna try this UMA thing on the wirless at work today, if not gonna head back into town and see what the shop say im so sure that i saw a big sign saying 14 days money back blah blah

----

"Return your new phone in perfect condition within 14 days, in the original packaging and we will refund your purchase. Just keep your receipt and all you will be charged for is the line rental used and any calls made (14 day money back offer not available on T-Mobile sim free or Prepay phones"

One way around it could be to say that the sales guy did a postcode check for you and told you the reception was good in the location you gave him.
it turns out the reception is very poor so you were missold (effectively);).

yeah i will see what's is what and pop down after work, gutted as was happy with the deal, but i need a better signal here, i should have checked really my fault! i checked home and not work doh!

They did state in shop it could be returned, but we shall see how

I bought my HD2 from Virgin Media on Oxford Street and they said I've got 28 days to decide if I like it or not. I could then return the phone and cancel the contract free of charge. I did ask if I would pay for the minutes and stuff that I used up until that point and she said no!

It's down to the telco as to if there is a returns policy.
Legally there is no cooling off period at all on a contract signed in a store.
So you do not automatically get any rights to cancel your contract.

However most of the operators will offer anything from a 7-28 day returns policy, usually you have to pay for calls used etc.

But remember it's down to the telco - no marching into the shop demanding as legally you have no cooling-off period.

popped in the shop they are happy to swap me onto a like for like vodafone plan, but i have to call orange from where i have the issue so they can do a full dio test and make sure it is as i say... which it will be, on hold now trying to get through...

and for the record i did a coverage check and they say 3 bars... bullcra*p
