Hi there,

I play 5-aside and football in general, I'm not really that good but I find it fun. The problem I have though is that my stamina is horrendous, I get tired way way too quickly.

What can I do? Is the only answer to go on Runs?

Thanks.

Running will be very effective for building your stamina in football. You need to work hard fella :)

Try doing lunges, leaps, sidesteps, squats, jumps e.t.c as part of your run to improve explosive power (plyometrics)

I've been trying to get fit lately for playing basketball with some work friends. I've been going running most days and it's paying off. Can get though an hour now without keeling over and dying. Cycling would also be another good thing to do.

I really need to work on my fitness its awful! I played in a world cup 5aside at work played about 4 matches and I was dying by the end of each game!

You're not the only one. I'm puffing and wheezing after my first run down the wing.

i play 5/6 a side football 3 times a week. when i came back from an injury at the start of the year i was so unfit. I started off running short distances for a month or so and then slowly over time improved my stamina. You will need to just keep pushing your self more and more in every game. Maybe have an energy drink before the game.

Unfortunately running is the best thing to improve fitness for football, though you should try to combine long jogs with short sprints. I know lots of people who do long distance running and get knackered much more quickly playing football and its because they are not used to the burst exercise of football. What I do is run 3 times a week; for two of these I run about 8-10 miles, and then I do one sprint a week where I just run flat out for as long as I can. Combine this with lower body work in the gym and you will be at a seriously good level of fitness for football!

How long do the matches you play in last skippi? I play 40 minute 6-aside games and I think they are only enough to maintain a base fitness level, doing cycling, running, tennis etc is what helps me keep fitness high.

Usually between 60 - 90mins.

I sprint quite a lot as speed is really the only thing I have to rely on when it comes to footie. :p

I am carrying an injury atm though but playing with it and I think I remember reading that an injury can use up quite a lot of energy that is taken in by the body. Is that right?

Not really fella. It's a static excersise, and doesn't really mimic the demand on the body of football.

Stick to running, and incorporate the other stuff I suggested. As you get a little fitter, I'd suggest incorporating sprint bursts e.t.c
