Well, my youth is officially over! My wife is 6 weeks pregnant with our first child so I need to learn how to smoke cigars ready for the big day. Time to start buying pushchairs, blankets and fluffy things I suppose and become a responsible grownup. Baby is due on the 28th of December so I can at least get away with only buying one present, tight git that I am! :p

Anyway, my twin brother is insisting that we get some big cigars to smoke for the big day. Should I start out on the little Cafe Creme type of thing and work my way up to the bigger cigars or just jump straight in at the deep end?

Congrats. :)

Avoid the Cafe Cremes, they're strictly for the type of chap who wears pleat chinos and chocolate moccasins.

Just buy a few decent cigars and chug away, it'll take a good few before the novelty wears off and you look and feel comfortable smoking one.

only complete ponces like my brother smoke cigars in order to celebrate.

How about you just spend every second with the mum and the little one instead of spending the next 8 months giving yourself lung cancer :D

Plus, what happens if you like it too much and start smoking them all the time? Not really going to be a healthy environment for your new born.

Thanks for the tip and the congrats. There's a proper tobaccanist in the town centre here in Nottingham so I might go and have a look around on my lunch break.

Are you supposed to inhale cigar smoke or just hold it in your mouth like I remember my Dad used to do when I was a kid? Actually, there must be some kind of "Cigar Smoking 101" on the internet. I'll see if I can find a guide!

Well I'm harldy likely to move onto crack and I wouldn't smoke inside my own home anyway. Trying smoking a cigar or two isn't going to kill me, I cycle to work every day and inhale more rubbish that way that I will from smoking a cigar. I've just decided it's something I'd like to try.

You can inhale as much or as little as you want, I personally don't inhale any (at least not into my lungs) and no-one but the cigar geek will care how you smoke it, if you're a non-smoker, avoid inhaling it. It takes a bit of practice to enjoy the smoke in your mouth without puffing your cheeks out or looking as if you've just puked in your mouth.

The guy in the Nottingham specialist is awesome. Be prepared to have the entire collection explained in detail. That guy knows everything about cigars. He's a compendium of tobacco knowledge. I got my first celebratory cigars from there. The store will cut them for you so you don't have to worry about that.

Basically you want to light it with matches, not a lighter as this can affect the taste. Don't touch the cigar with the flame. Put it in your mouth and rotate it a bit and puff on it until it's well lit. The guy should be able to tell you how to smoke it too. You just draw your cheeks in a bit to puff on it. Hard to describe but you'll get the hang of it!

I might not be able to dance too well in clubs, might not feel confident with what I always choose to wear and I might not always feel confident talking to girls but one thing I know I can do mate, is smoke.

If you wanna be smoking a cigar so it looks like your treating yourself to a cigar because of your new baby being born, and not because you heard it was a cool thing to do once then you definitely wanna be gettin in a few well before December.

You dont take the cigar smoke back, but you dont wanna be holding it in your mouth with your cheeks puffed up either, you're supposed to be savoring the smoking, enjoying its flavour, even if your not (I cant stand cigars most of the time) then you still should look like you are. The smoke just float out of its own accord first but just for a second before you blow the rest of it out.

You wanna be holding it in your hand a way that is comfortable to you and a way that suggests you know how to smoke. You know those people who when they pick up a pen between their thumb, little finger and their ear or something and you think Jesus, how is he ever gonna manage to write like that, who taught him how to write. Its the same with cigars, it should sit in your hand with ease, you should be able to have it in your hand from lighting to throwing without once having to change your grip or check that you're not burning yourself. I wouldn't say there was one specific grip but if your gettin big Winstong Churchill type cigars or even bigger Tony Soprano type cigars then you probably wanna be holding it with your index finger on top of your first, but I would start off with thinner ones first cos you can look like a royal pecker if you dont get it right.

Its weird how cool smoking can make you look, but if you get it wrong how stupid it can. When we had our leavers ball at school (16) a few of us got cigars to spark up when we got out of this limo, just to annoy the teachers, The 2 of us that smoked do look cool on the pictures, and then theres this other guy who just looks like a complete tit, dont be that guy.

Hope that helped.

ha, cheers. I quit smoking for a while then find myself gettn quite self conscious when usually I'm not. Smoking gives your hands something to do, and when done right, it does make people look cool.

I've got a housemate who goes thru 20 B&H a day and he smokes every one like hes bein forced to by his dad, dont underestimate the difference it can make by doin it right.

Smoking a cigar is very easy:

Cut the end (most cigars of the quality youll want will require this.) Not too much off mind or the cigar will flake a bit (from what I've seen and miscut:P)

Use a match!!!! Lighters spoil the taste, and yes this is a general consensus.

Rotate the cigar when lighting in order to get an even burn whilst dragging on it slightly.

To take a drag of a cigar (having never done it before in your case) make a sucking motion like on a straw, but not too hard 1st time or you'll end up inhaling it all and coughing.

Once you get the hang of dragging it then you wont need to sort of suck on it as much and it will be more natural.

NB!
Make sure your lips are dry, there is nothing worse than getting a soggy cigar!

Also I would say that inhaling a cigar isnt too bad but I actually enjoyed the flavour more by not really inhaling it.

Oh finally please dont clench it in your teeth. It looks bad and will ruin the end.

Good luck!

I'd be more worried about the lack of sex than smoking a cigar, Im not insulting your manhood in anyway, but hows it going to compete with something that ways 6lbs 10 Onzes? Its Not. It'll be the end of your life as you know it.
