Hello all,

my brother and his crack head mates are in the room next door.

So they have opened up limewire and downloading "various" media from the internet.

Now it slows my net down to a point of stupid.

Im on the Mac Pro - there MUST be some software which will allow me to limit his bandwidth to say a tenth of the full speed. I've tried Carrafix but I can't get to it work.

Any suggestions? Oh and I can't go in there and install anything or remote desktop in because that's turned off.

Cheers All.
Jacob.

EDIT: We are both directly connected via a network cable to a DG834G if that helps. I can block him using that but he soon clocks on to it when it comes up "NETGEAR HAS BLOCKED THIS SITE"

EDIT 2: I've booted into XP and now installing net limiter whilst I look for a Mac OSX solution.

go in and have a go at him

Not an option. he's spoilt if I lay a finger on him parents will go ape.

Net Limiter wasn't picking up his PC which I've now turned off due to him now gone.

I need a Mac OSX solution for when he is next in though. Suggestions?

There's nothing you can do from the Mac, without either installing something on his machine or having some option within the router to do it.

I would recommend a Draytek router. They have built in facilities to limit speeds. A 2820 costs ~£130 or 2820n (with wifi) costs ~£170

Or you can use a Cisco 800 series router and apply a nice QOS policy. Then you could guarantee a fair split of the speed between the PCs. (You could even do it on application types if its just P2P stuff you want to limit). Again you can get them 2nd hand for around £100-£200.

If you email me lec0 AT msn DOT com, I ll email you back with a word sheet showing my old dg834 i used at uni. It has print screens of all the settings needed to block everything apart from email, browsing and msn. :) Works well for people who do not know how to change ports

Take an old computer and make a linux gateway. There are all sorts of programs for linux that will divide the bandwidth for you.

tell him to limit the uploads in limewire

if you go around blocking stuff I imagine it will cause even more problems
