Afternoon guys.

I've just had an 80GB die on me. The drive it self is fine. However, the mainboard has a chip that fried on it. Just started smoking!

Anyway to recover music off it? if I replace it with another board, does it have to be the same make/model/size/ect hard drive?

Is this a chip on the drive PCB that's fried? If so you should be able to swap boards with a donor drive but it'll need to be an identical drive - make, model, size and revision if possible.

put the hdd as a slave in a 2nd machine and you can copy all the data from it
If the drive electronics are fried then it'll need the board replaced.
