Hey,

I need to take my private plate off my car to retain. I understand I need to fill in a V317 form and send it off. Now does anyone know wether I can just go straight to a DVLA office with the form and have everything done instantly? Or is it by post only and how long does it take?

Thanks

im not sure, but transferring it onto the car happens instantly so one would hope its the same in reverse, make sure you do it though I miss my plate so badly :(

Yeah, I'm still unsure wether I want to sell my car but I just want to take the plate off as it makes everything more simple incase I decide to.

You can take it into the local VRO, to retain a number plate takes about two week usually.

A transfer from one vehicle to another takes a week, and if it's on a retention certificate it's instant.

My wife did this recently, you can go to the DVLA and get the retention done straight away but I believe it takes a week for some of the paperwork to come through (new V5, new MOT, retention docs).

*cries*

Great plate there - have you still not been able to track the guy who your bought car down?

nope he has disappeared off the face of the earth, no idea why either, I'll give him a relative fortune just to get it back :(

his name is darren too, not remotely relevant :p

You can only remove a plate from a car by post. You can visit the local office, but it wont be done there and then unfortunately. It takes a few weeks sometimes :(

Yup, a few years ago, they used to do it instantly. About a year or 2 ago 7 days over post, now 7 days over post, then FOUR WEEKS till you get your V5 :/

I've taken a plate off a car there and then. They've given me the plate document (the one allowing you to get the plates mate), the replacement MoT and tax. The V5 came through the post a week later.

It was exactly the same taking a plate off retention and putting it onto a car, i gave them the V5, MoT and tax, they replaced the MoT and tax there and then and the V5 came through the post.
