Yesterday I bought the Corsair H80i, and as I was having some trouble installing it, I took it to the PC shop, and the guy installed it. I got it home, turned it on, and the fans were running flat out!, and when I started prime, it instantly hit 105c.. So I shutdown took it back and told him all about it. He had it a few hours today, and when I collected the PC he said it was now fine, it just needed tightening up a little. it does run fast when it first starts, but settles to a really quiet hum after about 10 seconds. The thing is, I just set my Ratio to x42 and ran Prime It hit 89c in a matter of seconds and would have gone over 100c if I had let it continue. Do I have to install some software to run the H80i because there are drivers on the website but there were none in the box on a CD or DVD. Other than that, what could be causing the temp rise? It says on the box I should be able to OC a 3770K @ 4.60GHZ at only 47.5 degrees, Mines a 3570K so surely I should be a lot colder that it runs at full load?

Download and install the CorsairLink software from the cosair site m8. That'll give you full control over them fans and you'll be able to make yourself a custom profile.
The default profile that loads on a cold boot is fine for use on a stock system for normal day to day use, but once you go into overclocking you need a little more from the cooler.

As far as what it says on the box goes it's not always true (although you would get those results outdoors in the winter). A few have actually gotten temps down considerably, but every system is different. Might be worth getting some TIM and removing the pump unit to see how it's fitting, have to be very careful about getting these square when fitting.

Ok Downloaded and installed, but I don't know how to set it up, there are no help files that I can see. I'm wanting to set it so I can run my 3570K @ 4.50GHz or higher using the offset vcore

On the groups page you should see your fans already grouped with the H80i Temp. If you lef click each fan in turn a config panel will popour on the right. In there you can set the profile you want for your fans.

If you want quicker response in the groups panel you can drag the fans to the CPU Temp. This will give quicker response to the cpu temp, but may cause annoying rises and falls in the fan speed.

Hope these picks help:

It says on the box I should be able to OC a 3770K @ 4.60GHZ at only 47.5 degrees

I wouldn't listen to that for a second.

Yes, you shouldn't be hitting the temps you are at 4.2ghz, but every CPU is different and you can never guarantee what temperatures you're going to get. It is dependent strongly upon voltage, ambient temperature, case setup, heat coming off GPU etc. so there's lots of variables.

My delidded 3770K @ 4.4ghz reaches 55 degrees under full load, and that's with fairly good cooling (it was 75 degrees) - these chips really do run hot.

What voltage is your CPU trying to run at mate? Check CPU-Z and see what it says. Based on the fact you had someone else install the cooler for you are you experienced in overclocking or are you using the easy options (i.e. all auto voltages) as quite often the motherboard will set these far too high.

Your fan speeds may be an issue but when you are getting temps that high it's most likely bad overclock settings or incorrectly installed heatsink/thermal paste. The H80i should run cooler than that without fans.

Also I'd be wary of a computer shop that doesn't stress test something like a H80i install before giving it back to the customer. A heatsink isn't the kind of thing you just install without checking it's done properly afterwards... I run a computer repair business and I'd know if a cooler wasn't on properly ;).

See if you can get them to show you it running next time, before you take it away. Normally they won't mind.

Ok there's something not right with this H80i and after I say what i'm going to say now, I'm thinking I should return it, let me know if you agree? The Noctua NH-U9B I had installed before allowed me to run my 3570K @4.5GHz with a Max temp of 81c This H80i with My 3570K set at 4.2GHz with fans running at Maximum Profile belts out 85c. Am I right in thinking this is extremely wrong?

Definitely something wrong there. Have you tried remounting the cooler with new thermal paste?

Perhaps the fella in the shop has put on too much paste. This can lead to high temps as well.

The Guy in thee shop said he had had prime running for 3 hours at 71c, I had a look at what he had clocked it at in the bios, he had just set it at ASUS optimal which uses 102.0 x41. I'm presuming the fans are installed right? front blowing onto radiator / rear sucking air off of the radiator and blowing it out of the rear exhaust vent. I've set the fans to quiet, and while Idling the temp is mid 30's. When I run prime It hits 91c @ 4223.00MHz and when I set the 2 fans to performance or maximum, the temp does not drop! It climbs. going to take it to another branch of the PC store (Head Office) and get them to check it out

n.b As for the thermal paste question, I presume he just used what was already applied on the heat plate by Corsair.

what else do you have in your case? there must be something chucking out a lot of heat for the temps to increase when it starts sucking in air.

Best way is pull/push yes, so one fan blowing into the radiator, one fan blowing from the radiator out of the exhaust.

Could you give us the overclock settings you are trying to use? Voltage for one thing...

16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM 1600MHz Gainward GTX660 that's all else really excepy an SSD and 3x 3TB HD's

OC settings I set were

Manual
100.0
ASUS Multicore Enhancement =disabled
Ratio x44
Internal CPU Overvoltage = disabled
Offset + 0.070v
LLC = High (50%)
Spread Spectum = disabled

just like when I had the noctua, but like I say, I cant even get that, I started at 42 and hit those high temps and gave up

Theres also one other thing I forgot to mention, In the CorsairLink2 theres a section to update the H80i firmware, but it doesn't exist on the Corsair website, they have taken it down for some technical issue reason, therefore I haven't been able to update the firmware yet, could that be a cause? if so do you know where I can download and install it?

I don't think that your H80i could be causing the problem unless the pump isn't physically working.

Are all other voltages set to auto then? What voltage does CPU-Z say you're actually reaching under load, as this is rather unpredictable using offset.

Also when you say you had trouble fitting this, was it fitting the bracket etc to the motherboard? If so then you should be able to remove it and inspect it yourself quite easily, as it sounds like you've installed heatsinks before.

Those settings look ok, I suppose a good test though would be to see what happens under stock before you try overclocking. Tests the temps with everything default for a good reference point.

The puzzling thing here though is this:; If while running Prime the temp reaches lets say for example 85c and the profile of the CorsairLink2 fans are set at performance, wouldn't you think that If I then set the fans to perform at maximum, which they do because I can instantly hear them speed up, that the temp shown in RealTemp would drop? If the answer is yes, then my question is, then how come it doesn't? It stays exactly the same. I just ran a 4.4GHz test again, and stopped after 10 seconds because it hit 105c on 2 cores RealTemp was logging, and reporting HOT!

Like I said earlier My Noctua would only let it reach 81c. I can only take it to the other store and let them figure it out there because as it stands, I have a water cooler that I cant overclock with.

I'd take it back to the shop and tell him to show you the temps when prime is running. 71 to 89C (after a few seconds) is a big jump and smells like something bulls make.

HURRAY!!! I fixed it, I noticed he had put it on upside down and the heat sink logo (Corsair)was vertical instead of horizontal, also the radiator was on upside down. I took off the heat sink, and there was just one tiny corner that the thermal paste had covered. I have now repositioned everything the way it should be and my temps right now running prime @4.4GHz are 64c Max :D looking on the Corsair website and seeing the way everything was on there got me wondering.

Edit: just a image to show it's working fine now this is at 4.60GHz
