Hi all, i'l try and keep this a simple read! :p

Ok, im 19 years old, about 6 foot tall and weigh 13 stone. This seems to be more than everyone i know my age. The weight doesnt bother me, i dont care how much i weigh as long as i look good and an healthy. My body structure so far is pritty good to be honist. I could do with loosing a bit of fat around the ass and belly section but besides that i have a good starting point.

My diet is pritty good to. I eat regular in the day and eat healthy enough i believe.

I have just started going to the gym again last week and want some guidance. I am licky in a sense that my body does change quite quick when i go to the gym so i know i'l get noticable results quite quick.

My aim is not to be 'big' and not to be 'skinny' or 'loose fat' but make myself look athletic, if that makes any sense!? :p I would like to eventually look like a cover model of mens heath. You know the type, beach body kinda look. I know this will take a lot of hard work and dedication but im ready.

My question is, where do i start? I have read the sticky on bodybuilding but i dont really want to body build. And i have read 'how to loose the flab' threads to but thats not my aim either really. I suppose i want to loose a bit of body fat and slowly replace it with muscle getting a bit bigger and healthier.

So what do i do? Plenty of cardio to first shed the flab with some weights and then when i have got rid of the flab move on to mostly weights and some cardio?

I wouldn't get hung up on the 'bodybuilding' tag. Simple reality is that you want to put on some muscle and the advice in the sticky is a great starting point to do that. It won't turn you into Arnie overnight!

If you're planning on building muscle, you're only going to want a small amount of cardio.

Firstly, build up the muscle, secondly cut with lots of cardio so that the muscle becomes visible and defined.

So build the muscle first by weights and cut fat after? But doesnt that mean ill have this belly for ages?!

Cant i do a month of hardcore cardio and then hit the weights?

you basically want to build muscle

and then lose some fat

post your current routine, and your current diet, then we can advise you more

edit// it really is up to you if you want to lose fat first then build muscle or the other way round. Thing is when you are bulking up, you are bound to make some fat gains too. you might feel you need to cut again then

Cant i eat loads and loads but eat healthy and do plenty of cardio and weights? That way im giving my body plenty of enery from the food and the cardio stops it turning to fat + burns the fat i have and the weights help me build muscle at the same time?

yes you can do some cardio during the week too to try to keep fat gains down

I would concentrate on building some muscle first. Think about it this way, who needs a beach body in December? You are starting at an excellent time for you to build muscle and then cut next year.

You say you want to be the type that would be on the cover on mens health, so I think that the above is definitely the correct course of action.

I understand that you want to look good, and you want the results to come in fast but it simply will not happen like that if you cut down now. Build the muscle now and cut later, your results will absolutely flood in comparatively this way.

You firstly need to sort out a decent diet. You cannot afford to be taking in less than 2500 calories a day at this stage. You will want to up this by 500 is you finding yourself loosing weight and not gaining muscle. As for protein go for roughly 230g to 270g a day, with high(ish) carbs for now, maybe starting at around 300g and to be honest you can keep the fat down, possibly supplementing fats with a little flax oil from time to time.

Buy yourself some Whey, I would recommend the protein at www.myprotein.co.uk with the discount code applied which will give you a 10lb tub of unflavored protein. I can also give you a discount code which will give you a further 5% off the total.

Best of luck mate, hope you get where you want :)

Its all about diet if you want a Menshealth magazine style body.

For a good six pack and the shape you see on the covers, you are wanting to be below 10% body fat..

6 packs are all about this percentage.

Doing the workouts is one thing, but dedicating your life to the serious diets is another. Its not as simple as hitting the gym.

Well my deit is pritty good and getting better by the day, so lets assume i have my mens health model diet sorted. What do i do to go from my pritty good shape to getting rid of the flab i do have around my ass and belly and making my muscles a bit bigger and defined.

Eveyone agrees that the only and best way to do this is first bulk then cut? I cant eat loads of good for you food and do lots of cardio (to keep the fat off and burn what i have) and weights 3 days a week to get bigger and leaner?

Basically, is it not possible to get rid of the fat and put muscle on at the same time? Surley if im doing cardio im buring fat and if i eat a lot of good food and do weights ill be gaining in muscle?

Simply put, you won't gain muscle and loose fat at the same time. If you're loosing weight you're in calorie deficit and this is no way to grow.

Excellent plan, this is absoloultly correct. Many people believe they have the perfect diet whereas infact they're simply not eating enough of the right things.

It would be very benificial to post your diet here, so we can see what's going on.

Ok, bear in mind that i am a uni student and have limited time and money + i eat healthy but i am not a machine so i do need some flavor in my diet!

Ok my diet consists of:

Toast, (brown), limited margarine and little bit of jam or marmalade
Cerials (the good ones like wheetabix and fruit and fibre and alpen), sometimes with a little honey and hot/cold semi skimmed milk
I eat atleast 6 eggs a week, either fried with i tiny bit of extra vergin oil or boiled
I eat a few cans of beens a week, low in salt ones
Sometimes have hash browns
Eat fresh good quality bacon or sausages, grilled
Have fresh orange juice, or cranberry juice in the morning
Have about 2 cups of tea or coffee a day with one sweetner
Make pasta with fresh veg cut in
Make egg fried rice
Chicken and turkey either as breast on sandwiches or as burgers
Lots of fresh salad and veg every day, veg steamed
Plenty of fish, fresh cod gutted or admirals fish pie
Plenty of fruit evey day
Some mixed nuts
I have joghurt every day
Loads of water

Err i think thats it, but im probibly missing out things, cant think now!

Right, that's not terrible, but it's not really good either.

What you need to do is post a days eating, with times and nutritional values for each food. It's a pain at first but it needs to be done. Make sure you take the values of calories, protein, carbs and fats.
